Do you ever lose motivation?
November 20, 2010 03:33PM
Well I was going to change out the rear beam in the xr. Kind of cold out there in the garage, I have a heater just takes a bit to warm up.

I have the new solid mount beam ready to go. Get the rear up in the air with jack stands. Take the rear tires off. Start looking at everything under there and look at the best way of making this all happen.

Figure this might take some time, dont want to spend the day on the ground and go to the range to fire off some guns instead!

I need some motivation!

I pulled the rear beam out of an XR this morning, it took about 45 minutes. Just do it.

Pull driveshaft, undo e-brake cable at center tunnel, undo brake lines at body bracket, undo shock bolts with a jack under the arm remove the bolt and let the arm drop.

Undo swaybar mounts at body, put jack under diff towards the front, take out beam to body mount bolts and stiffening bracket, undo diff mount to body bolts, and lower to the floor.

Pull diff out of beam first, then swap arms completes with brakes and axles. put diff back in beam and put it back in the car.

Done before lunch.

I should suck down a couple of energy drinks and just do it!........ maybe Sunday?

I think while I have it out I am going to change out the 4.3 diff for the 3.9 to see how it drives.

I think the only reason I dont want to start this job is because I just finished the master cylinder and booster swap. I hate brake fluid and bleeding brakes!

You have a garage? You lucky so-and-so! I do all my work on the rally car in the driveway, always at night, often in the rain!

You just need to bleed them smarter. I can flush/bleed the brace by myself in 10 minutes with no fancy tools. Ask me how sometime.

Well If you shared your process here on the internet we would all be speed bleedersdrinking smiley I just use the clear hose and container method but I also like to get the wife to push on the pedal, so I can see if there are any bubbles still dribbling out. She hates helping me with this, probably because I have made her help me do this with every car I have ever owned. And I have had a lot of cars over the years. Cars that need lots of tlc.

When I am lacking motivation I try to break the job down into small tasks. After I get through one or two I feel a small sense of accomplishment. That is usually enough to push me through to the end.

A friend of mine who has built several airplanes gave me a bit of advise that I have found very helpful. Try to do something, no matter how small, on your project every day. Stopping by the parts house on your way home from work counts. Getting a chunk of carpet to lay on counts. If you do something every day it will keep your mind focused on the project. It is amazing how all those little things add up.

It rains in California Al? I know that feeling though, its cold out there and motivation is hard to come by. Just fill up a mug with a nice warm beverage and ease into it.

Well, the beam is now out and sitting on the floor!

It may even go back in today!

Some times your brain can make things bigger than they really are.

Only rains when I want to work on the car. My wife recently invented a drink called a Hot-to-Trotsky, kinda like a white russian crossed with hot chocolate. Very motivational!

+1000 on small things.
One of the worst things I've ever done was listed out everything that needed done on the car still. The list was way too long and way overwhelming. So I stopped, tore up that sheet, and just said I'm going to do one thing at a time.
Beer acts both as a great motivator or a distractor. I go both ways depending upon the day. The worst is showing up at home kinda hammered at 6 pm on a Saturday and we still have plans for the rest of the night.

I'm the opposite. I'll see a huge project and stare at it and think, shit, where do I start? Let's look at the list! Okay I'm not feeling up to doing this but I can do this other thing today...

The list does nothing but get shorter.
