Do you ever lose motivation?

Rephrase. I still make lists. Now I just make small non-comprehensive lists.
Like a list that could be completed in a day or two of hard work.

I like to make lists because it feels good to check things off. I have a great sense of accomplishment when I look at a two page list with everything crossed off.

whenever I feel sluggish and stuff is piling up I turn up the gangsta rap, very motivational. Im about to get serious - possibly pick up my first rally car-to-be next week 73 ex show beamer with a 5 sp tranny and luckily will be able to keep said miniature car in my friends home shop where we will begin the tear down and cage install, AAAand will be dropping the 318 out of the duster and begining full rebuild of that - yey - hopefully will be done with the duster in time for spring fling and then with the beamer in time to enter some 2012 CRS events... stay tuned for pics - i promise will only show off the rally items everyone on here is also very inspiring - Im just glad Im not the wife who has the most boring job of pedal pusher

I don't make lists until I get down to the final few days, otherwise, like Grant, I just get overwhelmed.

I can't drink beer and work, so I save it until after I'm done, or when I'm planning. Often I'll spend a couple of hours in the shop just looking things over and planning what to do... and drinking beer.

I get more motivated (desperate?) the closer the next event gets. Between Targa and Tall Pines I had 2 months, yet it was three weeks before I got the car out of the trailer! It did require heavy machinery to get it out ... it went in with a front end loader with forks on, and came out with a back hoe. But if I'd been motiated I'd have got my neighbour to come oer with his bobcat 3 weeks sooner. I guess sometime you just need a break. It's OK to take a break... except if you have an event coming up and then have to work every night for a month until 1am. I'm getting too old for that shit!

We made Tall Pines - 5th year in a row - finished 1st 2wd, 1st Group 5 and 13th OA of 48 starters.

I hate doing the last minute thrash! There is nothing worse than showing up to an event on two hours sleep. It's such a waste to show up at a rally and not be able to perform at you best.

I like to make a to do list right after the event so that I don't forget anything. The day after I get home I wash the car and put it in the shop. I then make a plan and start working so that there is no stress later.

I lose motivation all the time. Then I get a cool idea and get fired up again for weeks. I think that's just my nature.

One thing I do with lists is make them "binary". As in, the task is either done, or it's not. There is no "Oh, that's 60% done." In order to make that work, each task has to be broken down to a pretty small level. My task list for a rally is currently 257 items. About 100 of those are documents, and about 10 are just deadline reminders.

Grassroots rally. It's what I think about.

When i lose motivation i watch a few grp B rally videos then run down to the gerage and thrash at it.
no realy. but i do everything in sequences. when redoing the front on my golf i would replace the struts and hardware, drive the car. pull it apart replace the control arms and hardware, drive it. replace the brakes drive it, "whats that sound?" pull it apart again. put the new...
You get the idea, it takes a bit longer but i find i will leave a bolt lose, forget the thread lock etc, when i do a bunch of work all at once.

My new work music all the time, be it cooking dinner at home or working at the shop is a Pandora station I created seeded with ODB, Jurassic 5, and the Heiroglyphics. It's great working music for me.

Lately, I've been listening to Fila Brazilia a lot lately. Not too fast, not too slow, and no lyrics to get involved in singing along with. Just good background working music

I am so motivated, that I already paid for and waiting for my urethane paint shipment for a car that I havent bought yet, haha... and I am constantly making lists in my head - I run everything by my friends...friends that are really good at getting great prices on stuff and shit and specialized labor or already have that special part or tool I would need to complete my list quicker - so I guess we've widdled the motivation factors down to 1) beer 2) music 3) friends oh yeah and dirt porn (aka watching others get their cars dirty while being videotaped...

That's almost the most important one to me. I have talked to quite a few people who have done a rally or two and get into something else and sell their rally car. When asked why they decided to sell it, a common theme is, "I got tired of spending weekends by myself out in the garage working on the rally car."
You also start out and want to get out there. For me, I've done a few races in my car. I don't feel that insane, I must get this car back together feeling much anymore. I do have to make some kind of progress on it at least once a week though or I start to get depressed. If it's running, it can sit for a year untouched and have no mental effects, but have it broken down and if I am not working on fixing the issue I get to be kinda psycho. Luckily I've realized it and the solution is really easy. At least one night per week minimum working on it. The list this weekend is to weld the front struts to cage supports, cut out a few cage elements, and weld new weld nuts for the skid plate support. Once I finish that, I can paint the engine bay and wheel wells. Once I do that, it's all reassembly.
