Hey Andrew, in the For Sale section some dooood was askin' him sumpin about a Ex-squirt, ya knows, the FWD type things? And Ex-squirt, hmmmmmmm. At least there is for the BT5 box some chance of getting a little shorter final drive and a limited Sleep diff. Turbo 1.6 fwd Ex-squirt has 4.2 ratio and a pretty OK VC Limited sleep Diff.. And those can be had in UK for £75. Of course one would need Ford driveshafts, knuckles etc.. To barrow an appropriate phrase: Now we see the violence inherent in the system!! |

'scuse me
This'n http://s29.photobucket.com/albums/c291/sand121/Rally%20Escort/?albumview=slideshow&track=share_email_album_view_click I dug the Focus a bunch, I drive one regularly, but I decided if I was going to build my own, I wouldnt do FWD, hence the Subaru. But then the used car there popped up, So i'm doin an about face. I think a big case of Automotive ADD also is playing a role, eh? So what was all that about england and final drives? Also, Oh but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you! Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 11/27/2010 06:33PM by BobOfTheFuture. |

OK, isn't that just a Maz-dog in disguise? The box I'm speaking of is the standard BT5 box in FWD turbo Escorts in '85-86. They had the Ford CVH engine which morphed into the Zetec. But That thing if'n I hain't moosetaken is a Maz-dog B series. Now US Exquirts from day one got Mazda transgressions so I think you're just plain buggered on alternate final drives at least affordably or easily. |

Cool. Looks like a good starter rally car.
I'm fairly new to racing FWD cars and have a lot of seat time with RWD cars (mostly Miatas, Mustangs, BMW E30s). While I didn't LFB much during my recent first rally (Mount Hood), when I did the car (a B13 Nissan Sentra) responded very predictably and proportionally to the level of LFB input. I just need to get more comfortable with it. My road racing car is a CRX Si and all of the fast ITA/H4 CRX/Civic road racing guys will tell you that LFB is mandatory to get fast lap times. During turns they are usually on the gas and brake at the same time, hence the LFB. I'm still working on that, too. ![]() Good luck with the car! |

Cosworth kit car?
Yeah, its a Mazda basically. 1.8 B motor, Ive heard good things. I am talking to a scrutineer, And I am aware the cage needs some update, but I am under the impresion it is a minor update. I just hope all goes well, and It last a little while in its present shape, as opposed to a ball or really flat on one side. |

I heard something about you can fit an RX-7 diff in the (later ZX2) G-series transmission if you don't mind not having a speedometer. The diff is the weakest link in that transmission.
I have a shit-ton of RX-7 diffs but I don't have an Escort, so I never found out for certain. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/28/2010 06:44AM by Pete. |

The transmission it totally fixable by throwing it out and bolting up an E153 from a Toyota. After you frag a few G-series let me know and I'll set you up with an adapter.

Everything from the main hoop rearward needs to be redone. The rear stays should be straight with no bends and I have no idea why they went all the way to the back of the car. Easily fixed, though, just go straight from the main hoop down to the rear strut tops and put an X between them. You don't even have to cut out the existing crap, it's just extra weight is all. Of course, you will also need A-pillar supports, sill bars, a roof X, and finish the main hoop X. |

I almost thought of picking that eScrotum up just because I'm familiar with that chassis and have a bunch of spare parts for it.
Clubprotege.com is a great resource regarding that chassis. It's essentially the Mazdog BG chassis, so the 90-94 323 and Protege, and '91-2003 escrotum. And even the Mazdog mx3 for bits here and there. The DOHC 1.8 is the Mazda mill, and goes with the G-series mazda gearbox. the 1.9cvh was available in the LX model up until about 96-97, they moved to the 2.0L SPI motor, and progressed to the zetec after that. Pretty much anything from an eScrotum before 91 is useless to that rally car. As mentioned above, conversion to the Toyota E153 tranny FTW, as far as bullet-proofing it goes. That being said, the only time I ever broke a G-series gearbox under Natural Aspiration was doing a reverse drop burnout. I put it in reverse and backed up to load the spider gears so both wheels would spin, then dropped the clutch and started making smoke. When I put the clutch in to shift to 2nd gear, there was a little click, and it stopped putting the power through the wheels. Apparently, the wee little spider gears don't like being suddenly loaded/unloaded. Which, I imagine Driving in Anger on loose surfaces will make pretty common. It's a fun car, though. And they're pretty stinkin' common. --sarge ---** To be in compliance with the Anarchy **--- Jorden R. Kleier Baraboo, Wisconsin, USA 1990 Mazdog Protege 4WD 1973 Edited 1 time(s). The DOHC was ZX2-only, the SOHC was sedan/wagon only. They were produced concurrently, although after 2001ish the only way to buy an Escort was if you were a fleet manager. (A lot of telcos and rental companies had them, and the post-public cars have weird looking valve covers) Around that same time they dropped the name Escort from the ZX2 and made it fugly. It's a shame that they never seriously pushed the ZX2. It's a far better car than the Focus was, stock for stock. Much better trans gearing, and it handled like a car instead of a minivan. I guess the 1.9 and 2.0 bottom ends are popular to ship to the UK. Good riddance. The 2.0 SOHC has a 100 percent probability of losing the #4 exhaust valve seat, which will destroy the head, at least three pistons (usually four), and the intake manifold (can't get the chunks out). Locally, junkyard SOHCs run $1200 but they'll sell an entire DOHC swap-over for $600 including the computer... they never really break in service. Edited 1 time(s).
