the 1.9cvh was available in the LX model up until about 96-97, they moved to the 2.0L SPI motor, and progressed to the zetec after that.

The DOHC was ZX2-only, the SOHC was sedan/wagon only. They were produced concurrently, although after 2001ish the only way to buy an Escort was if you were a fleet manager. (A lot of telcos and rental companies had them, and the post-public cars have weird looking valve covers) Around that same time they dropped the name Escort from the ZX2 and made it fugly.

It's a shame that they never seriously pushed the ZX2. It's a far better car than the Focus was, stock for stock. Much better trans gearing, and it handled like a car instead of a minivan.

I guess the 1.9 and 2.0 bottom ends are popular to ship to the UK. Good riddance. The 2.0 SOHC has a 100 percent probability of losing the #4 exhaust valve seat, which will destroy the head, at least three pistons (usually four), and the intake manifold (can't get the chunks out). Locally, junkyard SOHCs run $1200 but they'll sell an entire DOHC swap-over for $600 including the computer... they never really break in service.

I think all the things decended from the old 1600 CVH were dooo-dooo, problem with the Maz-dog ain't the motor its that "built in dead end " that worthwhile final drives are so odd/hard to source, and lack of a clutch plate diff for less than $900.

We can usually fake the gearset by gearing so short you skip 1st, but if you can't finsd a 4.88 or a 5.1 whaddya gonna do?

There is, or was, a 4.65 final drive available for the G-box. Can't find it now.

Still looking for one to compare dimensions to an RX-7 plate diff. Used to get 2-3 a winter with blown pins from people who get stuck and just spin one tire in frustration. Now I never see any.

Mazda Lantis LSD, made by KAAZ is a direct bolt-in for the G-box, as far as I know. I think less than the 900 mark, but I don't remember what the prices were. Reasonable, was my impression when I learned of them.

Jim Pierce of piercemotorsports.com in (Torrance) CA had a line on them last time I checked.
