I was just thinking about posting this survey on the site, actually. I might be able to get that done by the weekend. (Looking forward to some down time!)

You present interesting points, Morison. In the end, I'm trying to compile data of use to various parties. I think everyone would be interested in seeing how their rally experience compares to others - how far they travel, how much they pay, what they get for their money, and so on. A volunteer/working survey would also be a good idea, but I think would present some different questions. How might this information be useful to organizers/sanctioning bodies, ya know?

My concern is the co-driver component potentially skews the results. (Or does it?) Are there co-drivers who don't pay entry fees? What about co-drivers who compete in multiple classes in a year? How might that impact results on number of competitors during the season?

It seems this isn't as simple as initially thought, but I think the right set of questions would make all the difference in the world. Thanks for the feedback.

What about co-drivers who compete in multiple classes in a year? I typically do - I've even competed in multiple classes at the same event! (PGT in National and open in the regional portion of the same event
How might that impact results on number of competitors during the season? Co-drivers (and service crew, really) are competitors too...

Mining valuable data is rarely simple.
As an example, I took your question on how far I travel to get to an event to be the one-way distance yet Chris Martin chose to clarify that he was listing one way distances.

but I think the right set of questions would make all the difference in the world.
Without a doubt, which is why there are very large and very successful companies who do just that.

Co-drivers and event costs are a "Market Value" thing, and there's about a dozen different parameters that enter into the negotiation table.

Thanks for all the replies, gents. I've compiled the results thus far and added some additional questions on Gearbox Magazine. If you guys could help sort things out and make this a worthwhile survey to take, I'd love to get busy promoting it around the world as an annual event.

Thanks again.

I'll note that for all intensive porpoises there wasn't a significant difference in the Canadian and US dollar in 2010 ... USD should be the standard measure...

Wow! That's a LOT of seat time, mate!

How did you and the driver fare after Bega? I hope you were able to walk away from that one. No doubt you've got some stories to tell!

Thank you for sharing!
