Re: Opel / Isuzu / Kadett C

Well I guess I'll have to find an Opel and store it here until Mark finds a bus ticket out here...

Any Opel or GM based rally car built today should have the Ecotek transplanted in it anyway. Easy and cheap to find, lots of power and outstanding reliability.

We're now past 30k on the supercharger install on Brent's Cavalier with no issues other than a coolant hose rubbing on a pulley and that was corrected. 30k worth of street driving , a few driving schools, a couple of hard track days and several nights drag racing. Noting has broken or given an issue with that engine (or trans for that matter, Getrag 5 speed). While the early Saturn 1.9 was a POS for the most part, the latest 2.0>2.4 offerings are gold.

Someday I'm going to wander across the street and see what the neighbor has planned for that Chevette sitting over there...frickin Wilson...

I have a Manta with good body. Automatic, I heard the engine run. No title.

Free to anyone that wants it. I'll tow it to the coast for round trip gas.

I'll throw in a tandem axle trailer for $1000.00

Two side draft Solex with manifold $500

If you try to rally it I'll add extra transmissions, rear ends, front ends. Glass. Stock type wheels and some aluminum. And a few body panels. An ugly main hoop you can use for a cage pattern. Free.

Near new Corbeau $200

ButlerBuilt large $100

The sky here is blue. What's it like where you are?

We can't find used Ecotecs for love or money. They like to lose the timing chain guides and when that happens it's all over. Takes about 100-120k. We were able to save one once that the owner caught when it was making hellacious noise but before the chain went off time, but we still had to do some modifyin' to fit a new guide in place... one of the guide's bolts had actually fallen out and damaged the stand, so we had to mill it in-place and make a spacer, and grab some extra parts from another Ecotec that another shop had just replaced (chain was all in the oil pan). The owner actually WANTED to spend the money for a used engine for his Cavalier (!!), we were quoted $1500 as soon as one came in, no junkyard in the vicinity had one but they all had "standing orders"! It's almost as bad as the 2.0 CVH pile.

Unless by "cheap and easy to find" you also included scrap ones...

The automatic Opel is gone to a new home.

I have leads to more. I even have more, but they aren't free.

74, clean body, yellow, getrag, weber and other stuff. $2500.00

Well maybe you should move also...6 pages of used engines in the NW on Car-part.com including both egr and non egr. http://www.car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?userSearch=int&userPID=1000&userLocation=Northwest&userIMS=&userInterchange=BD%3F%3FS&userSide=&userDate=2003&userDate2=2003&dbModel=15.6.1.1&userModel=Chevy%20Cavalier&dbPart=300.1&userPart=Engine&sessionID=200000000000000000294747283&userPreference=price&userZip=98541&userLat=46.9859&userLong=-123.3851&userIntSelect=162663&userUID=0&userBroker=&iKey=&userPage=1 There were 6 pages 2 years ago when we bought the last one also. I paid $600 for a 30k engine. You need to shop for the 2003 engine as they have updated injectors and improved timing chains. The 2002 had some issues with both of the above. So by cheap and easy to find I mean just that

Rainy here today..but that changes every few minutes.

not to bad a runner for a total of $400 including the transport cost...

Bonus, it runs... but the fuel in it is like 6 years old...

$2700.
You're doing it wrong.

You must find $200-400 project cars..

There's a solid reason why I push 240 Volvos and Xratties as rally project objects
a) they're relatively easy to find cars
b) the parts to keep them running are easy to get
c) core motors to build while you're beating the motor that came in it, a snap

And as half warmed up rally cars on current North American roads,

d) they'll eat an Manta A or Ascona A alive for 1/4 the money..

25 years ago that wasn't the case, then an Ascona was a wonderful bargain (especially as the cars were 100-300 bucks.)

Exactly. I don't even think all the Manta A's I ever bought over the years totaled up to $2200. Of course, my Ascona B rally car was a bit more than that. I paid $2300 for it in 1988, including all the Panasports and it wasn't even 10 years old yet. Nowadays though, a Manta or Ascona A for under $500 is going to be so rusty it won't be worth saving.

Wooo, cool down there, Wilson. I love the Kadett C, but not the Isuzu version. My point was that they are not the same; not the same engine if one wants to have a decent engine to work as it came in the car.

Also, the one thing I have noticed about the Isuzu version is that it seems to have the same very poor adhering paint/prep systems that the Colts and Arrows had in the 70's, and rusts out like crazy in most cases; one pin hole in the surface, the moisture gets under the poor paint system and you get rust from the outside-in and topside-down. If the chassis is identical, then I suppose you could start with a clean chassis and drop in all the good stuff from Europe.

Regards,
Mark B.

Yeah, but just swap the engine . . . (grumble, grumble, grumble).

Welcome back Mark! Look forward to seeing you at SB.

with all the great engine choices and power available today it sure would be nice to stumble across a bunch of old Capris, Opels, Datsuns for cheap with no rust.

How many Capris have you got Steve?

Gotta love Capri's... It was the "bad boy" car of the 70's and early 80's in Europe.

Here's mine.
