So Olympus is the western MA event this year. Taholah stages as well as Brooklyn, Smith Creek and Palix. This outta be as much fun as you can have clothed. Grant get that POS Frod thing up here. Lane buy a coupla cases of cheap 30W oil and bring out the Volvo. Burress, Crane (Adam), Crane (the fast one Cody) and everyone else with a proper rally car ...2WD...better get things in gear . These are great 2wd roads, in fact I'd think a 2wd could take the overall this year. I think the SRT Diggins Sube will be too high strung to be reliable and the rest of the AWD field could be fodder for a couple of fast 2wd cars. It could happen.

Buren is talking all kinds of crazy talk about a Ford 5,0 V8.... How can we do a Group Intervention and beat some sense into his head? Hey Gene, what's the different Corporation rules on non related motors---A Ford has NO CONNECTION to a Volvo car. He seems to think they make power stock when we all know a turbo 2,3 would make the amount and the sort of power than has been proven ideal in the last 25 years of WRC....and since it came in the gawddamn things, be DROP-IN. V8s--- ![]() ![]() |

Ford bought Volvo in 1999. RA rules are a bit liberal and on a regional level he only has to prove the lamest of connections, so he's good in my book. The 5.0 is a huge performer and lots of easy, cheap add ons. The 4.6 family has as much or more and with an aluminum block option weight isn't a big issue. 300 hp in the blink of an eye, low end torque, absolute reliability. Personally I'd likely stuff a Chev 4.3 in one. Having NA power that equals turbo power makes NA the winner. Easier to tune, less heat issues, no seals to fail, no turbine wheels to shatter and a bunch of other issues that kill turbo cars. |

I was really excited about Olympus especially since we got lots of warning this year, but something about a 25 hour tow doesn't excite me. Leaning now to making Minnesota our first event as its only a 16 hour tow. I think that'll mean we can get away with two less vacation days. Allison's a trooper, but I don't think I can talk her into 24 hours of towing straight. Either way, we'll be shooting to finish off the season at LSPR.
The other benefit is that I'll get an extra couple weeks to get the car together and sorted. Still so much to do. Time to work on the car is very scarce until BWDS closes in March, and then I get really busy with the Denver job till the end of April. This whole day job thing really gets in the way of trying to have fun. Dave |

So Ford buying Volvo---which they have since sold---neeener neeener, Ford buying Volvo gawd knows how many years after the car was made "qualifies'. Ok but now Ford SOLD Volvo, so it suddenly doesn't. And gene sorry but looking at OEM to OEM the 5,0 stuff is way wimpier than the Volvo parts, especially crank, rods, pistons. And to build a GOOD motor, which I know you CAN build good 5.0 means just to match the Volvo you have to buy exactly twice the parts: 8 pistons, 8 rods, 16 valve, bore 8 holes etc when this talk of 300 is POINTLESS. My point is we saw a 740 turbo with an extremely mild build beat all but the hired British and the buy a ride SRTUSA trust fund kids. We see Tom Buress match and beat John Lane with a mild 2,0 16v VW. We saw plenty of people with smaller stuff spank Utecht badly in Idaho. Back in the early 90s Halliday in the V8 was spanked by a Ford V thing w only half as many cylinders and 1/3 the size. What the fuck is the point of V8? |

400 miles further to Olympus than Minnesota. I'll drive your rig out and you and Allison can fly. I'll pay for one of the flights, you pay for the diesel. Think we could stuff a Starlet on the trailer behind the BMW? I'll be there filming and doing MA video production again. |

Utecht wasn't 'on' at Idaho, that car in his hands or Hursts was normally way fast, but that was very hard to drive as it was over 400 hp and could break the tires loose on a straight in high gear. Idaho has a very unique road surface that looks like gravel but is a very slick granite (?) dust...spooky stuff. The other 2 V8s were having issues also. Some days is like that. The fastest guy going in isn't guaranteed a win, ever. Halliday was slow, engine had nothing to do with it. I beat that car with a 1500cc Datsun more than once. The V8 stock has about as much grunt as a turboed massaged Volvo 4. He may or may not need to buy rods, pistons and valves. We don't know the specs. Many times it is cheaper to buy 8 whatevers for a Ford or Chev 8 than an import 4. He may be running a stock take-out with 60k on the clock. A store bought reman can likely be had for around $1000 some days. You fail to take in account driver ability, road conditions and luck of the day. Results aren't always a true picture of the events leading to them. Also remember there are plenty of Chevy and Ford valve covers that say Volvo on them....all the way from 2.5 ltrs up to 502 cid I believe. At the end of the day it is Charles' build, Charles' choice. The prize money is the same with either engine.... |

But that's only 130-150 lbs more than a Volvo for no more power, no more ft/lbs and a bunch of fab to accomplish nothing. Come oooooooooon! Veeeeeeeeee Eight man! ![]() |
