Lap Attack @ PGP Feb 13th
January 31, 2011 08:47PM
It's time again! For this event, Mike will let us have a "Rally" class if we can get 5 people to pre-enter. What that means is, the usual format is 20 min practice session in each direction, then 3 timed sessions, 2 normal direction, 1 reverse, where you go for 1 fast lap, and the total of your 3 fast laps (1 from each session) count for the overall. In the rally class, we will line up 5 cars at the timing line, and you will start 15 seconds behind the car in front of you, and all 4 or 5 laps of the session will be timed, with the total of all laps in all 3 sessions counting for class position. In the wet, laps are about 1:20, so thats 15-20 minutes of competitive driving. If the event ends early (which it did last time at 2:30) then it goes to open lapping till the gates close around 5. Derik and I dual drove my car, and put 100 miles on it on the track.

If this works out, we can have a "rally"only day at the end of February. That day will start around 1 or 2 and run past dark, so night stage! We were thinking of making it more like a sprint, so you would recce 1 lap in each direction with your co-driver, and we could do 3 cars on track at a time, spaced out, and run 8-10 lap "Stages". That would be about a 12-14 minute stage. We would rotate until we run out of time. We would need 20 cars to pre-enter to make it happen at $95 per car, plus passenger fee of $25. Or 10 cars at $200 each. Since there is nothing before Olympus, this may be your only opportunity to drive your car in anger.

For the lap attack, call Mike and pre-enter, asking for the Rally class.
(253) 639-RACE (7223)

If you think you would like to do the Rally only day, post in here so I can get a count to see if I should pursue the organization of this.

A few notes, You don't need a caged car to do this, no HANS ect, but we should have an agreement that you have to run gravel tires.

See some of you knuckleheads on the 13th! We BBQ'd in the pits, and generally had a great time.

Out of curiosity, why have to run gravel tires? Why not gravel or regular street tires, not the performance street ones?

It seems silly to burn up gravel tires...

I just answered the same question on SS.

I have gravel tires that are no good for gravel anymore, so does every Rally driver I know. They work well. They are going to be thrown out anyway. You should learn to push your Rally car on all surfaces with the tires you use. It levels the playing field, so no one can show up with silly expensive track tires and have a huge advantage.

I use these events as a learning tool. Push the car to it's limits and beyond in a safe environment. From the last event, I know just how hard I can go on Tarmac with gravel tires. You will have some tarmac at rallies.

Sean,

was there last time..or will there be this tme a run group for karts, or is it just for cars?

I'll try to get Nat Stow to come, and I think Mark "fireball" Durley will bring the Fucus with his buddy Chris.

There were no go-cart sessions on the Lap Attack day.

If we get enough people for the end of the month, then it would be open carting till 1, then Rally cars till after dark.
