Congratulations to ....Trespassers Will and 100 Acre Wood
February 27, 2011 11:03AM
Drivers and crews of total newbie Brianne Corn for getting it together and staying on the road for a 9th Overall and a class win in Trespasser's Will and a 7th Overall and class win in Rallylite or whatever the hell the 4wd/no turbo class is called in 100 Acre Woods Regional.
Excellent result for first event on gravel.

And Good Job! to Ian Topping, 10th overall on in his nice 240 Volvo in Trespassers Will and another 10th OA on 100 Acres Wood, 4th in Gp2 both times.
Consistency is a good foundation to build on.

So tell us of all your adventures!

Glad JVAB could help you get there.

Sucks. Don't know what we are looking at to remedy this situation. There has been talk of Porch-a axles, getting higher quality pieces produced by Mark Williams (can anyone speak for this guy?), all the way done to just getting Brian to avoid those situations.

Sucks dog balls that our national run starts out with 2 DNFs for the same reason.

Oh well POR!

What about a small reduction in the maximum steering angle?

Or a switch that cuts 2 cylinders at maximum angle.....

The Triumph 3 cylinder they use in the Keith Code wheelie school has a wheelie bar on the back that is always in contact with the ground, so as the bike rotates up it pivots on a plate. They have an adjustable switch set that cuts 1 cylinder 1st, then if the bike gets higher it cuts another. As the day progresses they increase the angle to cylinder cut. You could do the same thing, or just program in a large timing change at full lock to limit power. Simple and effective. I would think if you remove the driver from the equation of protecting the axles it would be better.

Or just pony up for some better axles......

John, to sum up Brianne's win, I think she led by about 5 minutes on day one and 10 minutes on day two in Open Light. This was her third rally if you include one half of the Nocona, Texas event last fall and a Paris, Texas event a couple years ago.

Despite the fast pace, Brianne drove a conservative event with the goal of preserving the car and finishing the event. Jeremy Rowland did an outstanding job as codriver.

As crew chief (and car prep) we had issues with a failing rear diff, bent rear transverse arms and alignment, exhaust, lighting, thermostat and oil consumption. The steering, transmission, suspension, tires and brakes worked great. We used one set of soft compound BFG tires for the entire event along with 48 gallons of gas and 16 quarts of oil.

John, the suspension worked great! No bottoming out, good control after jumps, and well balanced. The tire wear was perfectly even.

The crew and car will be better prepared for the next event. Jeremy and Brianne are starting to click and I expect them to work together for an even better performance at the Paris rally.

A list of the carnage:

Bent the (stock) right rear transverse locating link on the rear suspension during the very first stage, the Super Special Stage. It the only suspension arm we did not have a spare replacement.

An old OEM thermostat went south the day before we left for the event. The only replacements we could find were elcheapo AutoZone style thermostats. They didn't flow enough to cope with the engine heat and we had slight overheating issues and had to refill the coolant at both services on Friday. On Saturday the overheating was worse and Brianne suffered some 2nd degree burns when she tried to top it off before reaching service. During first service we swapped out the low-performing thermostat for the original bad OEM thermostat with all the guts cut out of it. That solved the overheating.

Before the event we had a custom exhaust made that was one piece from the header to the tip. But the flange we wanted to use didn't mate up with the header. We ended up using a thin, bent flange and a used gasket on the exhaust. During the event the gasket eventually gave up, then the non-locked bolts backed off and fell out. Brianne and Jeremy were suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning when they arrived in service even though they were driving with the doors wide open. Thanks to the extra stiff hangers the exhaust didn't sag and was undamaged. The crew bolted it back to the header and double-nutted it to keep it attached.

The engine was recently built and was a mix and match of 2005 STi and 2000 RS parts. It wasn't ever really broken in and consumed -some- oil from the start. During the event it got worse and we were pouring two to three quarts in at every service. In it's defense, it does not have a working PCV system and had been overheated a few times.

One of the PIAA driving lights was wired incorrectly inside the housing. and burnt out the pencil beam on Friday. We were able to buy another bulb locally and rewired it for Saturday.

Things that didn't work as expected: The GC8 JDM STi ratios have too big a gap between 4th and 5th. We didn't get the interior sealed up enough and water intrusion was an issue. The seams under the rainrail (we too the roof off to weld the cage) and the rubber gasket where the fuel lines enter the body were trouble spots. We taped over the rainrails and clamped down the fuel lines to keep them from moving and popping the gasket loose. The lug nuts we used were too short and had to be started with a tool that reached down into the lug holes. We'll use longer open-ended nuts in the future. The Terratrip 303+ was wired to the ECU using the DSI box. It never received the pulse from the VSS and killed the speedo and odo at the same time. Even when disconnected the speedo was still dead.

Things that worked RIGHT: The GC8 JDM STi brakes which are the same as 4-pot RS fronts and rears are the same as Legacy GT. The welded up center diff didn't hurt left foot braking as much as we were afraid it would and when we thought we might have to remove the rear diff, we could finish in FWD. It worked great in the loose gravel/mud at 100AW. The STi front rack and WELDED adapter shaft worked well. A GC8 with a bolted together adapter crashed at Pikes Peak last year when the adapter failed. The BFG tires in a soft compound worked very well. We were garaged at Park Street Tire and watched them mount over 60 rally tires. They reported that the BFGs were the most difficult and had the stiffest sidewalls. The JVAB suspension worked exactly right and was good to go. We'll be adding camber plates so we can ditch the camber bolts we used this time. We used the OEM AC relay block to power the driving lights. It was re-pinned with higher gauge wire and wired differently to power four light beams. Brianne's landlord made some custom heavy-duty rear diff mounts that worked great and were easy to service.

We received a LOT of help from local Salem businesses. The owner of Park Street Tire put us up at his house and gave us a garage bay to work on the car. He's a good guy and I expect he'll be even more involved in the event in the future. Heavin Auto Dealer opened early to do an alignment on our car. Both K&H and Mooney NAPA helped with small parts and supplies we needed.

They're on the wish list.

Including the JVAB suspension and six BFG tires, there's less than $6000 in the car. Brianne is a University employee and needs more funds in a big way.

I pulled up to the house with $30 in the bank and lint in my pockets. Talk about cutting it close. I get paid today as soon as the check clears I'll drop yours in the mail.

Thanks for the quick turnaround. Your suspension along with the BFG's Johm Buffum hand delivered to me at the rally really made the difference. Having the confidence to hold the loud pedal down is priceless.

Thanks John.

Yeah I've broken well over a dozen axles, tried all kinds of things. Think we've finally solved it.

Basically involves a larger splined CV, upgrading the hub to accept it. Prelude/Accord CV joints with Circuitworx hubs (retains the 4 lug).
