Grant,

I was actually thinking about an ESPAR diesel heater. I have installed these on machines working in the Russian far east.

After trying out the Wabastco I would never do an Espar again.

I also really like the Wallas things, we had on on a boat, the stove heater option worked 100% of the time. Wallas is my first choice now, wabastco next espar last.

I however burn wood at my island get-a-way because - well it is real man stuff, splitting wood in the cold dark wee hours of the day to get a fire going.

I am just having a problem with the idea of a cord of firewood in the back of my rally car!

Oh I forgot about this neat bit of kit:

http://www.amazon.com/Contoure-5200-HeatMate-Alcohol-Heater/dp/accessories/B0025TI1AU

It is both a stove and a heater for if you get stranded, used one a few times this last fall on a boat trip. A bit slow at boiling water but not bad.

In Pike National Forest it's $10-20 for a personal firewood cutting permit. Depending upon the area, it's usually a 1-3 cord minimum if you want a permit. Unlimited but have to take it all in one load.
It also justifies having a big ass 2 stroke chain saw. Keep a few of the logs whole so you can set up a ax throwing course in the back yard.

I had a job offer once working in the Canadian Arctic. Snowshoeing in to check out rigs and determine what was needed to fix them if they were broken down. Then hike out for parts, back in to fix them, repeat. Was right after the divorce and sounded like a great break from the real world. Just me and Jukka, my arctic wolf dog. Pay was excellent at $14k per month, 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. Decided to stay in Denver and stay in school. Still wish I had spent the winter doing that instead though.
Alcan 5000 is pretty manly.

Gord,

I'll take a Bowler any day!!!

Unless the Syncro has a Subaru engine it is going to suck really badly.

What is the military vehicle?

I like the Ural, but motor cycles are not permitted on the Winter Alcan. Last summer I met the Alcan rally when they passed through Fairbanks Alaska. There was a father and daughter team running a side car equipped BMW.

I think I'd choose a late Model P71 Crown Victoria (ex police car). They're tough, reliable and comfortable to cruise the long haul, they have beffy electrical systems for auxiliary lights and they can be had all day long for not a whole lot of $$$ plus there's a whole pile of them everywhere in north america so parts are easy to come by.

Nope. That was turned into the car that Ramana Lagemann is running (and banged up pretty good at 100AW) this season.

The Bowler would be my choice too (if I had the cash, $100K I belive).

The syncro in the photo has an Audi 1.8T motor and that smae guy has another one with a euro 2.0TDI motor in it.

The military vehicle is a Peugot design (not sure if it is in production) that the Belgian army was testing when I was in Kosovo in 2000. They had 6 of them there, and the motor was a 3.0l I4 turbo diesel, 4 pasenger and driveline was all tucked up underneath very similar fashion to the HUMVEE.

I just got a 2010 URAL so that is why I posted it, I knew about the rule of not allowing mots in the winter event thumbs up smiley.

In all honesty I would probably get a big ass Suburban 4x4. Gives you lots of room for crew and gear and is generaly a strong vehicle and not too price for older models. Only downside might be the fuel consumption so I would look for a dual tank model (rare but can be found).
