"entirely re-fabricated with 20 year younger motor and trans, completely different suspension, etc. - that's just like comparing apples and bananas."

Which is exactly what we're doing to volvos, corollas, and merkurs...

Ehh.... Yes... And your point is with regards to historic cars?

Also, the amount of re-fab needed to say the Volvo is very minimal compared to f.ex. the Mustang to achieve about the same level of suitability (for rally). And finally for cars like the Volvo, Xratty, etc, there are proven and available solutions. For Odd ball cars you're on your own, reinventing the wheel.

And that's the point... It will take forever to get you on stage in a car that gives you just a bit of fun, if the starting point is limited. It can be done... Sure... But it not much about racing imo. More about ... I dunno? That "being unique" thing is something that I think I hear alot from 'mericans. It is very important to be the first to do something?
But as John says: in your rally scene, it's unique actually going on stage, reappearing, and then kicking ass in something that WORKS!

Tmmay, Timmay, Timmay,

what those who have built their cars up are doing is not "entirely re-fabricated......completely different suspension"

It is completely normal rally car prep to most people world wide.

The thing that is "completely different" is the local attitude that there should be "rally ready" cars out there for cheap.

I was going to comment, don't like getting in the middle of these pissing matches, but the amount of suspension fab on my car was minimal to get on stage.

Front: install JVAB struts.

Rear: strengthen shock pocket on arm, and install JVAB shocks.

Everything else I did was to improve reliability, but was not necessary.

I fabbed front a-arms After they got bent when the car had an altercation with a coffee table sized boulder. But, I drove it home 70 miles after the off, without replacing any parts.

Engine is a stock re-fresh with an added Intercooler ($20 Volvo)
Stock T9 trans. Stock driveshaft.
I added a BMW diff for ratios and lsd, would have been just fine with a stock welded diff.

How is that extensive modifications?

Robert:

BTTMotorsports is Jari Hämäläinen who is a Finnish rallier who also has a house down in Florida, and who is a bud. He rallies odd iron, but he does get them on stage and has fun.

Gene:

Jari is building a Monza as well - it was FIA homologated. The other guy is John Barnett from Huntsville, AL (Yellowhammer) who also puts on the Crow Mountain Hillclimb in Scottsboro, AL every year, plus competes in road racing and other car sports.

bttmotorsport,

Who are you?

I don't think that you are making a very good argument. The majority of the cars shown in the videos were pretty good in their time. They have proven rally history. Totally unlike a Mustang II.

I would also be willing to bet that the owners of all those cars have more resources than our friend with the Mustang.
Hi Rallymech,
My argument was that Car does not have to be a winner if owner likes it and wants to drive with it. Yes, most cars on those clips have a history, but like completely stock Peugeot 404 might have been somewhat competetive back in 60´s, but definately is not now... In the same class there´s 911 Porsches, Volvo Amazons, 2002 Ti´s and so on... BUT, he´s on the same start line and has fun, with no pressure and no need to win... That´s called hobby..
Whan i started to make Opel Monza for rally, i got somewhat same coments as newb... Nobody ever competed with those, too heavy, not possible to find parts etc... In the first event we were 4th overall... With stock engine, transmission and rear axle, shocks were spax and saftey equipment was added... So even an odd car might surprise, and if it doesn´t, so what? Owner have had good time, spectators saw something different and nobody was hurt, not even those 240 or xratty drivers.. if they did´nt happen to lose... thumbs up smiley
Resources is completely different matter, You can drive with an reasonable budget, never cheap but sky is the limit... If everybody would think about the money they will spend on this sport, there wouldn´t be this sport...
Sorry about my poor RallyEnglish.....

Round 1 of the F-Cup a benz was second, beat by a 240.

I do believe the announcer said the benz ended up on top last year.

A benz would be different.

thanks for all the info and insights. i think the only reason i would not want to rally the II would be because i like it too much. i don't think it would be a bad rally car, i just don't know if i want to smash it up that bad.

Gee - seems it should be easy enough for Jari to follow the one and only rule that this forum has and fill out his profile information with this real name and location. (Or does being Finnish somehow get him a bye from both following this simple rule and being vilolenty attacked by John for not following it?)

Well, we didn't want to tell you, but Jari is mentally challenged - being a foreigner and all - and especially being Finnish - so we thought maybe we would give him a bye on that whole registration thing.

...and yes tim, i have thought about the 24 hrs of lemons, but i think the limit is $500 and i've already exceeded that.

Just for novelty I sent an e-mail to my friend who is one of the head LeMons Judges. He said that there have been a couple of Mustang II's over the years. Only one was fast and that was a V8 car with a bunch of experienced drivers. He didn't think an I6 automatic example of the species would have any trouble getting through BS judging with no penalty laps.

haha, that's funny. i wouldn't beat it up like that though. plus i don't even have the old v6; the person i bought it from asked if i wanted it and i said no. it was in really poor shape and i didn't want to mess with fixing it. always thought an old fox body v8 would be good for lemons though, and they're cheap as dirt.
