yeah i must have. i haven't kept up on the WRC stuff to much. When it was on, I think the speed channel years ago, i used to tivo it. but now just no time to keep up with everything. but it is kind of sad to see it dwindling down to this few of manufactures. hopefully it will bounce back some day. I think the new formula will bring a few back, it's definitely a lot cheaper. It will be up to three soon enough with BMW entering the Mini which has been done up by Prodrive, the same company that made the Subarus.
I don't know why the last WRC Subaru was so horrid. It was simply not competitive. I have a vague memory that they had the wrong tire brand. But the hatch Subaru should have been more aerodynamic than the sedan, and the layout was the same. |

I've read that when first released the hatchback had nearly zero rear suspension travel. And the drivers complained. Subaru backed out of the WRC. later they worked it out w/ a new rear girdle by ExE-TC, I believe it's the same piece of kit the VT cars use. I didn't think the new wrc was going to be fun to watch at all, but it's great! the drivers having to find the gear changer makes things spicy. Seb vs Seb in mexico is intense, I wan't to see Loeb lose. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/06/2011 03:06AM by Sean Edwards. |
That's Prodrives and Subarus fault. Didn't the engineers at either place realize they were making a rally car? I remember that for the subarus to come close to the pointy end of the stick they were flying literally all over the place (and tended to ball the car up massively). That theory holds some water.
Me neither, for some reason I had it in my head that they would be slow and boring. I didn't know about the locked center diff however, which combined with the shorter wheelbase makes for some twitchy nervous cars. A far cry from the amazingly sure footed cars of yesteryear. The Ford I think nearly has a SQUARE foot print! Talk about something that wants to turn. |

I remember reading a comment by someone at Prodrive who said that the leader of the WRC design team had an F1 back ground. He left or was fired but by then the damage had been done. In other words, the design flaws had been homologated. If anyone has more or better information about this I would be interested to hear it.

How did NO ONE catch that? Should there not be a _basic_ check list, X+" of travel being one of them. |
