I was thinking the same thing, I do have a large cutaway of an Evo but I just tossed in the Subaru for now because it had the most detail.

Yes! If I can find a nice color cutaway of a 2WD car then I'd use it!

Although I could just ditch the cut away and in its place put in a picture of a once rolled 2wd rally car on the stages or in rough shape like mentioned above.

I am actually really liking that idea, anyone have a picture I can use?

Is that a mid 80's Celica in the old poster? If so, I may have an idea about it; if not, then I don't have a clue. From the cut-away, it look to have a live rear axle and longitudinally mounted engine; so that would be right for that vintage Celica. Can't tell on any front drive shafts from the picture presented. Anthony, can you post a direct-on shot of the car part of the poster only? (Not one at an angle....)

Toyota sorta sponsored a couple of team cars in the US in the mid-80's; I recall a Celica like that being used. I also recall 'shoot-out' type of event (sorta an X-Games before the letter X was invented for sports) in '84 or '85 maybe, where only selected drivers were invited (guys like Buffum Woodner, Shepherd, etc.) and they took turns running the same car back and forth on a remote, wooded stage road in central Michigan, to see who was the best driver in the same car. All went well, 'til someone (Shepherd I think) totally balled up the car on one run (and I mean "totally balled up", it was a wad of sheet metal packed around a cage....). The drivers emerged with minor injuries but that was the end of the shoot out. There was a promotional film/show made on it.

All of this was going on while the Michigan International Rally was being run and promoted in the '83-'85 or so time frame. That event started in Detroit and meandered up through central MI, as far up as Cadillac, I think. (I would have to drag out my old forms for the rally to be sure I had it all right.) It lasted 3 days, and was trying to emulate the world level rallies of the time. I think they were trying to get an FIA rally back in the US. That ended up with Olympus.

Also while I was looking for front axles on the poster I did notice the artist signed it on the front bumper. The name is M. Willams with the date '90. Hopefully that rings a bell for someone.

With the closer view, it looks like it may be an independent rear suspension and shafts. Can you see if there are any front halfshafts? The 2nd car that comes to my mind, basedonthe grill and general body shape, is an Ascona B, but I always have Opels on the brain, and they did not have IRS that I recall.

M. Williams......I would suspect Mark Williams. I recall that he lives in the Wash DC area. He was a top navvie in the day. I can look it up but think he co-drove for the likes of Buffum, Shepherd, and other top drivers. If you like, I can try to track him down; seems like he and I communicated on some timing gear ideas for Rally WV a couple of years ago.

There are definitely front axles, and with the engine and radiator layout I'd have to say it's Audi based. Maybe a 4000?

The radiator is mounted like an Audi. could be just a free hand of the ultimate rally car.

Mark that would be great if you could try to track him down!

Also how do you guys feel about replacing a cutaway drawing with a real picture of a slightly damaged car on stage? It might be easier to get the permission of the person who took the picture then to track down one of these artists.
