Does anybody know wtf happened at the last Mendocino Forest Rally that makes it impossible (or near) to organise a rally there ?
Politically Correct folk of SS are pussyfooting around the question and not even giving a cryptic answer. After all I am not asking who lost the Man-On-The-Moon photos. Cheers M.Samli Phoenix AZ Gaylant VR4 EVO III GSR (Stolen) Rallies are no place for traitors |

I don't know, but I saw your last replies and hit up Google. The only relavent hit I got was a copy of meeting notes back in early 2004 by the San Francisco SCCA where someone proposed starting that rally back up. The proposal was unanimously passed. Otherwise, there was an article about Rhys Millen overcoming some mechanical problems in the 1980 running of the event and a bunch of links about a Mendocino Driving School.

I saw that too, SCCA is as worthless as tits on a bullfrog.
I also saw that in 1980 Ray Hocker came in 3rd overall, in the 70's Harvey ran it, bla bla bla. Nothing about the last running of the rally. Cheers M.Samli Phoenix AZ Gaylant VR4 EVO III GSR (Stolen) Rallies are no place for traitors |

On the one hand, Mendocino County has been over run with treehuggers -vs- everybodyelse for decades. On the other hand it's been rife with Weedgrowers -vs- Cops even longer. I've never heard if this stuff ever directly put the kabosh on a rally, but it usually makes local land owner/managers a tad uncooperative.
Why your interest in this particular old rally? Rich Smith |

I suspected something along these lines from what I was reading yesterday, myself. There was a letter published on a logging company website saying people in the area were complaining about how fast logging trucks were driving on the roads through there. They felt "unsafe" and complained. The truckers slowed down, but I can only imagine what that type of community would have to say about rally cars echoing through the valley... The more I read about Mendocino and Mendocino residents the more I get disgusted.
They remind me of the people in the movie Village, a bunch of utopic asswipes. They have a march or a rally against something every week. Cheers M.Samli Phoenix AZ Gaylant VR4 EVO III GSR (Stolen) Rallies are no place for traitors |

My guess is that it has gone a similar route of the Gold Rush Rally in Colorado. Too many Californians in the area that complain, most of whom have too much money. Hey, there's also three hill climbs that had to be retired due to this same reason. One is close, and we are only 'allowed' to have the event every other year. It is everyone's favorite event too. We actually drove one of the old hill climbs on our way back from another one. We got on the road and I was like, "Holy shit this is a highway" because there was so much development that the road was widened and superbly maintained. There were condo buildings and huge houses. Google Earth actually shows it as a highway. It was also one of the only hill climbs that has had a death when an Open Wheel car hit a deer at over 140 mph.
Umm... Yeah, too many Californians. Grant Hughes |

Out here, we call them "NIMBYs." Not In My Back Yard. "This would be a great idea! I love it, just not in my back yard." :rolleyes I imagine, with increasing urban sprawl in the western region, drafting a new event from scratch (which doesn't involve jalopies in Columbia - hehe) would be next to impossible, eh? Here’s the real story. The U.S. Forest Service, which manages the Mendocino National Forest, no longer allows “speed events.†The U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which manages many Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Areas does allow speed events.
The two agencies even cooperate with each other. President Obama recently signed a bill that rearranged land near Redding California, giving BLM exclusive jurisdiction over the roads and the Forest Service control of the remote areas. By the way, California senators Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer co-authored the senate version. There goes your tree-hugger argument. Starting a new event from scratch is not impossible. The Mendocino Rally this August will be the first performance rally in Northern California in nearly 30 years. I have encountered support and enthusiasm for it everywhere I go. I hope some of you can enter it or volunteer to work it. As I post this, I see an advertisement for Kathy Fowler Chevrolet. Interesting! Our service stop is at her dealership in Lakeport. that's internet marketing technology at its best right there. I'm sure you've been to their website in recent months? That dealership has a marketing product (there's a bunch out there) that tracks you, and when you go to other websites, you're hit with the same ad no matter where you go. Click on it and Rally Anarchy will get a few cents ![]() |

We ran a car at this event '86 or '87, can't remember at the moment, Buffum was running the Sport Quattro and Millen was still in a RX7 so I'm guessing it was '86.
Seems to me there where some Police officers "camping", I believe partying for the weekend may be more accurate, in the woods and did not take kindly to the rally cars blasting by their camp ground at the wee hours ... I can't imagine why myself ... I believe there is reference to this event in John Buffum's book "In Like a Lamb, Out LIke a Lion", and yes John had done some partying too ... Edited 1 time(s).
