I thought newbs could rally g5?

Just to keep things striaght, NASA Rallysport events have no restrictions on what car you start in. Gettin' tired of this not being pointed out......

But if, you want to start out doing both event types, then you have to go with the LCD (least common denominator).

Wagons? Well, penty of room for spares! Seems like the last wagon I saw running was way long time ago; it was an early 70's Chevy Malibu wagon.

And listen to all the advice you can get on the cage build; it's a costly place to make mistakes and do anything wrong. It can be done, but listen! Welds have to be very good, so if you are not a welder, plan on having someon do that who is an experienced welder.

Best of luck to you, and welcome! I managed to build/rally in the old days while in college (the cars and requirements were a lot simpler), and I worked half the quarters and had the GI bill. So find ways to make money to pay for your car habits! Forget fancy suspension and such, keep is simple. Or just stick with rally-x for now; a ton cheaper!

Fun fact:

The wagon is always more aerodynamic than the sedan version of the same car.

I forgot to mention.

Talk to Rob Wright, he's the local R-A tech guy and can help you with cage stuff

Also, talk to Scott at Izzy's Custom Cages. He's local and does all kinds of cages.

I actually live right down the street from Scott.

Isnt building a car yourself is half the fun

I know that people derive satisfaction from successful completion of something. Ok, but do you have tube benders? A welder and the skill to use it successfully? Can you develop that skill? I know Scott is starting on a rally build here soon. Go look at it and talk to him about it.

I'd also contact Rob at rgwright@squirrelsociety.org. Again, not to pick on you, but he can help you avoid costly mistakes.

I have access to multiple tig and mig welders, but no tube benders. I've done lots of mig, but have only gotten the chance to play around with a tig a few times. I probably would go to someone for a cage when/if it gets to that point. Scott's work is amazing from the pictures I've seen. Thanks for the advice.

Isnt building a car yourself is half the fun

It is to a point. I remember once while talking to a guy once who had built and rallied a car and had rolled it and was in the process of building a new car. He said he'd come to the realization that he enjoyed building the cars more than actually driving them. I've come to the realization that I am much happier with a finished and drivable rally car. Even if I'm not driving it for months on end, it still makes me happier having it complete. When my car is in pieces, as it currently is, I just feel overwhelmed and at times a bit depressed about it. Especially if I start thinking about things I could/should/would do and then the cost starts spiraling and things get even more out of hand. I've been dilly dallying for a few weeks now on tearing into my engine as part of me just said to toss all the shit back on it, drop it back into the car, and start reassembling. But I know there are things that need done. Valve stem seals, check rings, check bearings, valve springs, etc. All don't 'need' to be done, but where the car is at now it makes way more sense to just take care of this stuff now...

Build the 240 Wagon! That's always been my preference anyhow!

Sean. We are planning to camp at Ocean City State Park but we were planning to bring tents.

OK. We are in space 19. If you go round trip from Seattle, then you could take the camper. Heater, stove, fridge,
2 beds, and a chemical toilet. Tows just fine behind the Volvo.

We will have a Motorhome this year, but I have my mom and 2 boys in there too.

Let me know as soon as you can so I can make time to get things ready for you. I need to un-lower the Volvo a bit if you want to use it on gravel, as it is pretty much slammed now.

Space 19. Good to know. I'll make sure and book a site not too close to you guys. Actually I was probably going to get one in the loop closest to the water. I went camping on the pacific coast two years ago and woke up at 4 am and looked outside and it was super foggy, low low tide, and possibly one of the coolest and eeriest walks I've ever gone on in my life.
Camper would be fun but I don't want to spoil anyone. We'll tent it up. We're going to be doing that alot this year so I want the crew to get used to it.

Ok, so I am not the only one who has thought about rallying a wagon. I have this nice straight 84 245 that is just sitting round the house. Has wiring issues at The moment. But I was thinking of dropping a mustang driveline into it. Would be shoot to drive instead of the Eclipse that is another possibility to build. Brent Dacres. Cincinnati,Oh.

OK, the symptoms are that people get this woerd idea to throw in slow, junky stock V8s "because all the powerz" that (build to the hilt very expensive non stock) V8s supposedly make..

I don't know if its a congenital problem of perhaps environmentally induced or a result of trauma?

Whaddya stink Doctor Megulon?

The problem is junk wire insulation that Volvo used under the hood is breaking done and exposing the bare wire. And no John, the V8 idea is because I happen to have one sitting in our Impound yard wrecked. It's free instead of building a proper 4cyl for the wagon. Didn't mean to ruffle the masters feathers. ok, kidding aside the wagon would be really fun and not out of the question to build. But reality is that the original motor would stay and just get rewired. Am thinking just getting a car done and on the stage by years end.

Are you on Turbobricks.com?

My favorite is the "wanted" section of the classifieds there, post the part you are looking for and within a day 3 peolpe are posting offers, its like reverse ebay.

Yep the engine harnesses do rot on certain years. A good wiring harness should be available there for about $100. (beats the retail of $450)

I think no one points it out because the majority of people really dont care enough to ONLY run NASA events, so they look at the most stringent ruleset and apply those.

Al, who is known as Smegulon-7 on Turbobricks, is broadly hinting that one of his Sercive Crew Homies knows the current state of every 240 in every junk yard from Weed to Was-On, Ville.
So his Homie could get you a harness easy peasy.
