Also, the 3rz exhaust ports are on the wrong side. Again, not the end of the world, but its another thing.

Your car is so old and wobbly the exhaust probably switches sides during a stage anyway....

I can switch the exhaust way easier than you can find a good 22R in a wrecking yard.

We're in the process of putting a 2RZ into our Corolla, It seems like the best option overall, we're going to run the rest of the season with the 4AG we've got and try to swap before next season.

The 4AG is too old and low on CC's, parts aren't as readily available as they once were and the stock transmission sucks!

The 3S is also old, parts are expensive and drying up and it has to sit at a steep angle to drain the oil from the head.

22R isn't even close to worth the trouble.

2RZ's are cheap, plentiful and bullet proof, 2.4 liters. we bought one off craigslist for $150 complete with a full wiring harness, dizzy, starter and a knocking rod.

Blake that's the one I was thinking that all round seems to make the most sense and absolutely vitally, still be fun to beat on.
Maybe the 2,7 might go quicker maybe but maybe it's so low revving and flat that you doze off and crash!

What years did they come in what cars?

they came in 1995-2004 Toyota Tacoma 2WD's

95mm bore 88mm stroke

the 3RZ has a Balance shaft that spoils the fun, but the guts will fit in the 2RZ block but I don't think it's worth it.

Oh tim, all them 50m shocks arrived, how long you want in the front?

185mm front and a full 210mm for the rear. Same valving as last time or possibly a little bit stiffer since this car is going to be slightly heavier.

Curious what transmission do you plan on using?

Not exactly a high revving engine for sure with the limiter @5700 stock but 142hp and 167 ft-lbs in OEM trim isn't terrible and isn't sleep inducing I don't think.

Dave,

The key to a decent 22R is a 20R head. If I remember correctly you will need the early 22R block. You can do some research on this hybrid at Pirate4x4.com. Used engines are cheap and plentiful. Parts are also readily available. I can recommend Ted at http://www.engnbldr.com/

I have clean, bare 20R head if you are interested.

The 22RE in my truck happily revs to 5000 rpm.

I've heard that as well. It'd certainly be an inexpensive way to go.

The question is how much more engine do you really need in that car? I would think that a good 22R would be ok for the rest of the cars life. When the old girl finally gives up the ghost you can still sell the 22R and move into a better rally car.

The 22RE in my truck happily revs to 5000 rpm.

The hottest 22R's actually still use the 22R head from talking to guys who race-prep them.

I built my cousin a very cheap 22R via milling the head 1/8", fitting 1 mm oversized SI stainless valves, and essentially grinding the 'high-swirl fin' out of the intake ports. My flowbench showed an improvement from 88 cfm to 138 cfm. Still the record for any heads I've prepped, percentage-wise!

The exhaust port flows like shit BTW, so they really respond to split profile cams and larger exhaust systems.

Anyhoo, added a cheap 4>1 header, 2.5" exhaust, a pair of used 45 DCOE Webers from a swap meet and a reground camshaft and she revved to 7500 freely. It hit 144 mph in an '87 2wd pickup truck body, so it had to be making some kinda ponies.

Shortblock still had 170K on it, so I changed the timing chain and tensioner 'to be safe'.

That engine would have made my 88 4Runner a LOT less frustrating to drive....
