Olympus Rally Planning...
March 15, 2011 03:43PM
Woohoo. Flights dropped to $170 per to Seattle. We're coming into Seattle on Wednesday night 4/28 at 11 pm.
We've got a spot at Ocean City State Park for Thurs-Sat night.
We fly back out on Monday night from Seattle at 7 pm.
Not sure if we'll stay in Seattle or Ocean Shore Sunday night. Probably Sleazzattle so we can go check out the city some on Monday. Unless there's a cool afterparty in Ocean Shore.
When's everyone head out there?
Sean. Can we really borrow the Volvo? That would be awesome. We'll have to figure out how to get it. We'll probably stay at a hotel somewhere in Seattle area on Wednesday night. Guessing most people are heading to OS on Thursday?

Nah. It that we'll have like 5 people or something like that.
I did think of you in my email to the crew that we'd be camping and on Sunday probably sleep at a hotel or in your driveway or something...
We will be coming by on Monday. Though mostly to see wifey and the girls and not the grumpy guy. smiling smiley

Yes, you can use the Volvo. Will you be using it to run out to stages and stuff? If so I need to swap springs and stuff.

We are headed out Thursday, and return on Monday. I could pick you up at the airport Wednesday, or bring a helmet and hop on my Supermoto that is at Johns house and run it up to my house to swap for the Volvo. Leave the Volvo at Johns when done, hop ride to Airport.

John also has that nice Surburban collecting dust. 3 day temporary permit is only $25.....

Yeah. We'll be running all over the stages. I'll pay $200 towards renting a car from someone. I don't really care what it is, but 5 seat with room for gear is a plus. Still saves me money, puts money in friend's pockets, and no dealing with rental car companies. Is that the diesel one you've been trying to get rid of for years John? The one from AZ that you tried to sell me once.
We usually go out and time the planned route to make sure that we can make it and also so we can see the route once without pressure so we don't end up lost (OT 2009) and to make sure that the plan I have outlined is actually achievable (Ojibwe 2009) and reccon for cool areas to film from and make sure that stages where we plan to park at an ATC, FTC, or junction have filmable locations within a reasonable walking distance so we don't have a NEFR 2010 happen where we have four of us at one corner.
Then we'll drive that whole route during the rally. Basically like a TSD that's run in conjunction and around the actual stage rally.

Ok. I will swap springs, put the roof top box on, and you can use it to your hearts content. I think Johns Suburban would be better, but the Volvo would be way cooler....

I would volunteer to help you guys out but I think that I will have a job by then!

John's suburban needs to be driven.

Are you good to go with media passes and whatnot? Is there anything the Olympus crew needs to do to facilitate your filming for MA? Route info or route books? I'll try to help where I can.

We're looking at flights now too - hope to have something booked tonight. Whoever said GRC doesn't help rally participation rates appears to be incorrect. Was dreading the 20+ hour tow twice in just a few days, but since we can split it up over a couple weekends and fly back & forth from Denver for $170 each, it actually seems to make sense.

Now the question is do we have enough room for the different kinds of tires....damn, should've bought the long-bed and/or time to fab up a tire rack on the trailer. Having never run the event, but knowing you guys get some rain up there, is it a good idea to have mud tires, or will a grooving iron and reasonable tread depth on gravel tires suffice?

Dave

Opened up gravel tires seem fine.

The gravel a dirt fish is very abrasive.

Olympus roads don't seem to get muddy, seem to have a good gravel base. But I have not done all the roads, so not 100%

Where you leaving your stuff between events?
