Wha? You don't like mavrick-y?

Or you're just jealous! That's it!!! (trying to think like the typical "fan-boi" and it does seem that their explanation for anything that they can't understand is you're either jealous, or your a Haterz.....no other reasons seem conceivable to them but hate and jealousy...)

Come on , didn't you read?
They said it'll be awesome..
Therefore it'll be awesome!

It's European Rallycross.
Everyone should stop complaining and start thinking about things like:
Any licensed rallyist can enter.
All rally cars are legal for it.
2WD has a $5k purse per event.
There will be ESPN coverage.

I think it will actually benefit rallying in the long run. I think it'll be cool and I'm stoked to see how my friends do with their privateer budgets.

Actually, this could grow the momentum for 'volks racing' or other low budget wheel to wheel rally-like action.
For that matter - the 2wd entry for GRC events is $300... not that bad for a couple of days playing in dirt and trying something new.

Although "European rallycross" bores me to tears, Grant does make a good point.

Sorry Grant.

I can't afford or risk having to afford potentially reshelling my car when some yahoo with little experience can't back off for a corner and rams me hard.

Not rich enough...

Pretty much. Too bad they're all west coast dates. I'd put up with the risk of car damage from wheel-to-wheel to have a chance at that money.

I'm still considering about heading to the Chicago Euro Rallycross event

So long as it is rally guys in rally cars entered, I think you have nothing to fear. At the 4 events in NJ, our Golf was not touched even one single time by another car. The only marks on it were from clipping the mirrors on tire bales when trying to take the closest line possible......

I'm a stage rally guy fosho!

However euro style rally cross could conceivably be a nice easy low budget stepping stone into stage events. The top cars are $400k yeah, but a 2wd car for rallycross is going to cost a hell of a lot less to build and run than a 2wd stage car and just might set the hook on a few guys to take a STEP UP TO STAGE RALLY.

And like stage rally, as long as you go about it in the right state of mind and not wine about someones elses hi tech big ching car wha wha wha >>>> and just pick another compeditor you are consistantly close to, race them and HAVE A GOOD TIME DOING SO, you'll have fun.

On a side note, rumor has it the Snoqualmie event is not a go as of yet. They tried to submit a permit to the county to hold an "automibile race" which is not allowed due to zoning (and they knew it). Powers of HIGHER power... that be... got in volved including the Mayor, and some hollywood types, a new permit was submited on the 11th to "film a TV show". No word yet if it's a ago...but there is PR and PGP 20 miles down HWY18 so I'm sure "something" will happen..

I'd have to guess if the "tv show" permit goes through they would not be allowed to charge for spectators. If anyone got in to see it would they be "extras"....??

Really John? You're the one that's always talking about all the free cars. Shit, I sent an email yesterday to a few Colorado peeps looking for a stripped shell to use to finalize a cage kit design for a Merkur and maybe to start building a spare shell (kart meet horse) in the future. Had one lined up within about thirty minutes. He's gotta pull the rear subframe and gas tank and it'll be all mine. I'd like to try to get at least the bent bars built and test fit for Jason's car so I can throw them in someones trailer to haul out there pre-Olympus.

I'm not interested at all in doing any of the rallycross events, but that doesn't mean I don't think it's a welcome addition to the US scene. It's more fitting for a top down model than stage rally and if it pulls some of the top down people away from rallying and gets us to focusing more on privateers and reasonable budgets than all the better.

If I were to do rallycross I would build a car specific for it. I'd make it cheap as possible shell prep wise, no seam welding, minimum cage(but nascar door bars) and plop all the money into HP, diff, and gearing that would be suitable for a stage car swap.

Paint would be color of the week home depot 5 gallon "mix mistake" applied by $2 brush!

I like the way you think.

My initial comment was not because of any dislike of rallycross, but more because of the fact that the discussion so far had been a 50/50 split between:
"Euro-style rallycross is the greatest thing evar and will save stage rally so that any old joe that wants to go race cars in the woods can make money doing it"
and
"Euro-style rallycross is an atrocity of the highest order and will be the end of stage rally in the US for everyone, forever!"
with nobody really in between.

I'm in the "meh, i'ma gonna go play in the woods" (someday) camp.

Same here.

Personally, I think that wheel-to-wheel circuit racing is different enough from rally that just because there's dirt doesn't mean that a rally driver is well suited for the task, even if they put "rally" in the name.
