Reminds me of this dialogue from Star Trek V:

SPOCK: Greetings, Captain.
KIRK: Spock! ...What are you doing in this neck of the woods?
SPOCK: I have been monitoring your progress.
KIRK: I'm flattered. Twelve hundred points of interest in Yosemite, you pick me.
SPOCK: I regret to inform you that the record time for free-climbing El Capitan is in no danger of being broken.
KIRK: I'm not trying to break any records. I'm doing this because I enjoy it. Not to mention the most important reason for climbing a mountain.
SPOCK: And that is?
KIRK: Because it's there.

I guess my answer to your question would be "Because I can"

Cowboy coming into bar after weeks on the trail eating dust, sees a dog which is engaged in licking his balls....
Cowpoke says to the Old-Timer leaning back in his chair, "I wonder why he does that?"

Old timer: "Because he can"

Of course later our Old Cow Hand has drunk the Rio Grande and stumbles out and dthe old dawg is again, or still lickin his balls, Cow Poke says
"Daaaayum, I wish I could do that"

Old Timer: "Weeeeeelll, better ask his owner if you can first"

Bahd dum!

The thrill of going fast, pushing on a stage and saying at the end of it "that was well done".

That hasn't happened much unfortunately sad smiley

Growing up in south Texas I never had the chance to see a rally in person. It was not until the early 80s when ABC Wide World of Sports started showing clips of the European rallies with Audi stealing the show. I have been dreaming of rally ever since.

What little info I could dig up in a small Texas town was that it was a sport for the silver spoon club. And to the back of my mind went the dream only to be resurrected many years later on switchback saturated mountain pass in western Italy. I was taking my last two classes and when I came home I would graduate from college. On the side of that mountain I asked myself the what next question. The if I won the lottery and could do anything question. The answer was... Rally!

So I said. @#$%* the lottery. I'm going rallying.

That was 6 years ago and I am finally in the drivers seat of my own rally car.

The short answer is. I get to drive the way I want to drive with out getting in trouble.

Real cars. Real roads. Real fast!

for the sex...

Rallying makes and addiction to crack seem more like a mild craving for a saltine...

I'm addicted to the unrivaled feeling of freedom you get by driving as fast as you can.

I've gotten into some trouble going after that feeling of freedom on public roads.

I Love being out in nature, I love dirt roads, ever since my grandpa first took me down a dirt road in his jeep when i was 6. I always begged him to "take the fun way" when we would go and visit him.

I love horsing around in my car, Doughnuts, Ebrake pulls, drifts, tire smoking, mud splashing , throw rooster tails of dirt, snow, mud, water, anything.

I love competition! I love having some way to compare my performance to that of others and see how i measure up, and then trying to improve.

And then i found rally .. someone already packaged everything i love (involving a motor) all into 1 thing smiling smiley

Living in the UK starting to drive in the late 70's. British "lanes" and a mini cooper S. Competing in Roads rallies. Watching the lombard RAC in Wales, Roger Clark and many, many more Mk1/2 escorts. Witnessing the on-slaught of the Audis, Hannu Mikkola, Michell Muton... Saabs - Ari (crash) Vatinnan... I've been into cars my whole life, rally is just my chosen focus because it's the ultimate... it's an addiction as many others have said... there's just somethig about beating the crap out of the car you've personally built, trying tpo make it to the end, and be as fast as you can in the process.

I started in Road Rallies around 1977, did a whole bunch of other stuff on two continents and came back to rally, TSD's around 2000, and Stage rally in 2006... Once you've been stage rallying you'll never go back tyo anything else for long.
