Why do you rally?

My question is this- Why do you rally?
I rally for the love of going fast and legally terrorizing the open road, it's an addiction. I know this because I used to think about get laid 100% of the time. now, 50% of my thoughts involve rally. Perhaps I should seek profesional help, oh wait, that is what I'm doing. Why do you rally?

You should seek professional help.
You should think about priorities and stay in the present..

When it's time to rally, think about getting sideways.
The rest of the time you should be thinking about "getting laid", "hookin up" or playing "Hide the zucchini" as I used to say, and then think about that.

I rallied because it was a nice big step downwards in terms of demands and difficulty, it was easy and fun and I didn't get cold and rained on and it was in the woods. I had, after all, just spent 20 years bashing my head into mud and sand and TREES!
I rallied because it is fundamentally a different thing than the track stuff I spent 15-20 hours a week doing for years, it was pure YAHOOO! rather than concentrated precision.

And since the rally car doubled as a COMPANY DEMO car, I rallied to show what I could build for customers. They'd drive it and want everything (except the 5.45 final drive---the stock 4.88 would do) And the reduction of gross income writing everything under "Advertising" help reduce tax liabilities..

Right now I'm not rallying or having sex, so I think about both a whole lot.

Of course, when I am in a car, it makes me want sex even more.

However, why do I do it when I do do it? I guess addiction would be the best answer. Got introduced to it as a wee child and it's just been part of my life ever since. It took me far too long to get into the silly seat and I've only gotten to play driver at a sprints once but hopefully one day I'll get to experience stage from behind the wheel.

Till the car gets built (ha, so many of us say that) I'll just have to settle for rallycross, tsds and the occasional codriver stint once in a while and a lot of volunteering and being envious.

Because John told me I should.

Wanted to do it ever since I was a boy, but never thought it was something I could do. Started playing at the drift track a couple years ago, and started a cheap drift car build. Well, my awesome friends, like Derik who did the cage, and John who has everything else, persuaded me into just doing the cage in rally spec "just in case". Well that snowballed.

Last year was our 1st year, we did 4 rallies. My wife co-drove. After the first stage, she tells me I don't need to hold back for her. I think she is hooked worse than me! Just yesterday she told me to stop being a pussy on the 5's and 6's and to just put my foot down. I think she wants to win....

We rally because we enjoy the time together, away from kids and work, just focusing on a common goal. I LOVE to go sideways, and love the woods. Spent many years on 2 wheels clipping trees at maximum attack, I think it was a natural progression for me.

Because getting a series of corners right, catching the oversteer in time to be set up perfectly for the next apex, is satisfying beyond words. So is winning a stage in something that shouldn't be able to do such a thing. Because it's so damn difficult, from building the car to getting to the event to finishing the event. Because it rewards proper preparation, even though I don't know very much about that and am slowly learning. Because starts are often the most exiting part of a race and we get to do it at every stage. Because service areas are dern near as much fun as the stages.
Because it makes all other forms of motorsport I've tried feel boring by comparison.

I've been doing it long enough that I don't really know what else to do.

I enjoy cars, I enjoy going fast on gravel, and I have met a lot of really cool people over the years that I am proud to call my friends.

That pretty much sums it up for me, with the addition of: "I did MX for a long time as a teenager, but my physical shape got progressively worse (too much beer drinking and playing computer games instead of doing other sort of sport), so a sport with an engine, bumpy track/stage that I could do sitting on my ass instead of coughing up my lounges from pure exhaustion after 2 minutes, was very welcome... that and the fact that I like to fabricate/invent/come up with stuff :-)".

I'm addicted to the unrivaled feeling of freedom you get by driving as fast as you can.

I've gotten into some trouble going after that feeling of freedom on public roads.

I Love being out in nature, I love dirt roads, ever since my grandpa first took me down a dirt road in his jeep when i was 6. I always begged him to "take the fun way" when we would go and visit him.

I love horsing around in my car, Doughnuts, Ebrake pulls, drifts, tire smoking, mud splashing , throw rooster tails of dirt, snow, mud, water, anything.

I love competition! I love having some way to compare my performance to that of others and see how i measure up, and then trying to improve.

And then i found rally .. someone already packaged everything i love (involving a motor) all into 1 thing smiling smiley

I remember when I was around 11 I found a newspaper that we'd get in the mail on occasion, and it was showing a bunch of cars from LSPR, in particular a Celica graphic'd like the WR team. I begged my dad to take us out there "It's only a 14 hour drive, that's not that bad!" No dice.

To make this a non-rally life story gigantor-post, I forgot about it for like five years, but once it made a resurgence, it's never let go. I love all things off road, but rally for me is simply the coolest. Especially since cars aren't "made" for this sort of thing, and here we are doing just that on roads that most would think we're crazy to do that on.

The feeling of going sideways, and the pucker factor when you're pushing and almost lose it, and just because it's rad and I love it are the bottom line reasons for me.

My old man took me for a ride in Steve Fuerhelm's 510 when I was like 8, on what I think was a Gorman stage, and tween that and spectating Olympus when the gpB cars ran, I never really had a chance.

Well I don't yet I can't even call my self a rally crosser. I do have a car in the garage that whispers "your a pussy now finish what you started, then drive me into the ground and when I can't go any further fix me up and do it again". This year I will listen and learn to control a car on the edge and live a dream very few people have the balls to try

My first experience in a rally car was also in a 510, then a Fire Arrow, then another 510 and a 1200 between the ages of 5-10, all out on the roads in the Molalla and Colton Oregon areas. I wish we could still run out there.

Working Olympus when Mikkola ran the S1 is one of my fondest memories. The sound of it coming towards our spectator area lives on in my mind, and then of course seeing it happen only feet in front of me.

"Mikkola ran the S1 is one of my fondest memories"

yes, that. Over and over like a stuck highlight reel. And the noise that Lancia made, angriest car I've ever heard. The service area that was deserted in the dead of night, then all at once within 5 minutes it was fulla semis, lights and noise, then these shrieking cars flew in, I watched a gearbox get changed on a Peugot in 3 min flat, then they all flew outta there, the semis were gone in no time, and there we were in a deserted service area thinkin Wot de Fock...
