Global Rally Cross, ESPN3
April 17, 2011 09:41PM
I don't care if it's not REAL rally, it's still pretty freaking sweet. Plus, Cody Crane has the best pass in autosports history at 2:20ish on the Friday section.
For all of us that couldn't make it out there friday, and sat

That was a great weekend. The stages are still #1 in my heart, but entering a corner inside of someone else is a pretty great feeling. I can see the appeal of circle track racing now.

We gots us a convert!

I still remember my first pass back in 1978 on a 1/2 mile dirt track.

I had to work all weekend and boy was that tough. Bidness comes first and this year we're swamped with work. I sure wanted to be up there and watch the fun.

I wasn't there but I watched it on ESPN3. The 2wd class was more interesting than the big boys to me. I just wish they would get rid of the stupid joker lap/ X Games car destroyer gap jump gimmick. At least the 2wd cars don't have to go over the jump but then what's the point of the joker lap for them? At least it's aptly named. They think they need it for excitement but I would much rather see the cars actually race together for the whole race, wheel to wheel. That would be much more exciting.

Great to see Cody drive his little CRX up the tailpipe of that Porsche every time. The only reason the Porsche won was because he had twice the horsepower and could just drag race away on the straights. Given equal cars Cody would have spanked him hard. Erikson wasn't driving that Porsche all that hard. Would love to have seen John Lane out there in the Fire Breathing Monster. He would have given that Porsche a run for his money for sure.

It was also good to see Doug Folsom mixing it up in my old Omni. (It's the same car you sometimes see sailing over a jump in the top left corner of the screen.) Good use for that old shell. Even got a corner named after him!

Cody's brother Adam (ha ha, j/k) and Kris Dahl were looking good, too.

If someone really want to check the replay out on ESPN3 you can use my login information for Comcast. You have to email me (not PM mind you) and I'll send it to you. The 2WD is the better show in my opinion too.

I did see Sean and Kris on a news clip the other nite also, with their names mentioned. Pretty cool. The Ford had a nice tail out film clip.

I had a great time, was a riot.

I was surprised how well reasonably fast Limited 2WD competitors can do at this events.

A bit of insight on some of the major performance issues, which they really didn't talk about: I was planning on running road race tires, full tread (rain tires essentially). Got there and realized that only a fool would do that considering how much time you'd loose on the wet, and on the gravel. So I used gravel tires.

So the Mikael with the Porsche was running road race tires, I guess in Sweden all the rallycross courses are paved and smooth, hard pack clay/gravel. He didn't bring any other kind of tire. The thing would launch like a rocket, but you could catch right up to his on the gravel sections. I have a broken windscreen and headlight as proof.

Problem is you lose a lot of time & momentum trying to pass, and it isn't easy to see with a windscreen full of mud.

So the start is pretty critical.

During qualifying you could set a time that is pretty close. If he was at Irwindale, it would have been comical how far ahead he'd have been. I suspect he'll dominate the one in Colorado.

I'd do it again in heartbeat.
