Helmets
April 19, 2011 07:07AM
So I just realized my current Bell M4 is out of date for a lot of places (SA2000) I really want an open face jobby with a built in intercom. What do you guys recommend? And where to get em? I'm trying to keep the whole thing under 600 if possible.

Thanks
Dave

I don't know if ordering from Canada makes sens at the current exchange, but my friend Luc sells Stilo helmets that I think would fit both your needs and budget.

Wow. That almost makes me want to get a Peltor to have an open face helmet for smoking at hill climbs. That's a good price.

Note that the BSI standard is set to expire in a couple of years - at least FIA's recognition of the standard will expire. Not sure what RA or NASA are planning to do. CARS will cease to recognise the standard as well.

Hmm...I should send an email to RA and find out. My current Peltor is BSI, but I believe the G78 is FIA 8860-2004.

^^oh, that will suck if either RA/NASA stop accepting those. Then again, those Stilo CF full face helmets look sick.

I'm thinking about joining a Lemons team this year, so I'd need to get a full face helmet for that anyway, right? I have a few RallyX beater helmets laying around I use for loaners at events, but I have a big XL head.

According to their website, the G78 is still BSI

Looking around at different sales outlets, looks like the Peltor G78 is tested to the BS standard, and is "FIA Approved" because that standard is currently approved. Nobody lists it as meeting the "new" FIA standard,so I'd assume it does not.

CARS and FIA say the BS standard expires 12/31/2013.

If RA follows their current pace, they'll add that expiration info to the 2013 rulebook (2011 rulebook newly lists that SA2000 will expire 1/1/2012).

Looks like I've got a couple more years (at least) on my current helmet before I need to replace it.

Again, only an issue if the sanctioning bodies follow suit, but FIA is apparently looking to ban full face helmets in closed cockpit cars. I think it is early in that discussion and there is not telling the backlash that will result from it (not that FIA cares about backlash) but something to think about.
(The theory being unrestricted airway access without needing to remove the helmet)

Not if you think about it.

Remember, only in closed cockpit cars where the body shell prevents impact with outside objects as a rule. ALSO remember that under FIA a fire retardant baklava ( ;-) ) must be worn, head and neck restraints must be worn and seats/belts must meet a certain standard. What extra protection does a full face helmet provide?

The down-side is that the same shell that protects you makes it more difficult to remove your body in the event of needing to provide medical assistance. Open Face helmets allow for unimpeded access to the airway without having to effect any other actions (such as cutting or removing the helmet.)

Again, I heard this third or fourth hand - but from a 'good' source - and it is under discussion so it may not see the light of day.
