I thought Stage II weight reduction was when you filled the cage tubes and tires with helium. Maybe that's stage III....

I'm actually kinda sorry I made that post, because it was in kinda the wrong tone. It sounds like I'm making fun of the guy, and at the time I was... But why?

Well, I must say that I'm kinda frustrated with how the OP is going about his rally endavours. It seems that there is a whole lot of talking and asking for advice, and not a whole lot of listening. Me making fun of him is probably not helping one bit, but it kinda seems that the options were exhausted.

So to OP: sorry for the post... but on a well meant note: pleeeeeaaase try to listen to some the guys here. It seems to more than one of us, that you are not listening, and that you are going in the wrong direction(s). Direction(s) that wont keep you in the sport... and ultimately that is what anybody here want's you to.

Peace out!

i am sure patrick is for real and is VERY excited.

however, there is a very tiny part of my mind that keeps thinking this seems like something a very bored dennis martin would do to pass the time.

I, for one, am beginning to suspect we are being trolled at this point.

FWIW... His amateur call sign comes back to a matching name and Minneapolis address on the FCC database.

and this is why you should always buy a LOGBOOKED car if you buy a built car:

hey, i have a 1987 ford escort gt, it has a 1.9 efi high output engine, also the ecu is out of a turbo murkur allowing higher rpm shifting, stock boddy kit, plastic windshield and side windows, no interior and at the moment no seats,, full roll cage ideal for a practiceing rally driver, car starts rite up and sounds like a monster needs suspension work, a new engine mount,, does need to be towed away...

click the link to see the "cage".

I see what you mean. There's no way that seat is legal.

Omfg I was hoping that car got crushed that's my old car I had when I was 17 I welded
the diff and put the stupidest cage on the planet in. Now I'm slightly wiser I hope. Haha demons

Hey G-Fox,

my buddy has a 83 stang for sale; white, straight body, NO RUST, 4-banger runs fine. He bought it and pulled out the T5 and driveshaft (to put into his volvo) and he's asking $300.

You would want the v8 T5 with the closer ratios anyway..

Sorry for the delay guys.
Out in Pittsburgh.Right now with a few pals.
No, I promise I am not trollin', I am a noob with good auto skills, but lack the lingo of Rally, pre say. As I have stated, I don't know everything about everything.

As per my Mustang project; DaddyMonk and I drove out and picked up a 1981 Mustang Notch with 113k on the clock; needs carb work and an engine overhaul. This one runs and drives though.... compared to the rustang. I looked this one over, jacked it up, drove it, etc etc. It leaks oil from the rear main seal like no other; got it home (100 miles) with 2 stops and 2 quarts of oil. This one has the I4 in it and has the holes in the firewall already for the T5 to get dropped into it.

So yes, I was listening to you guys. Sorry if it seems otherwise. I am taking notes and taking my time. The rustang will be parted out into the junkstang, and by their powers combined, I will rally... In due time.

As per my friend and his rally stuff, it really wasnt legit rallying, per say. I will bother him for any proof of sanctioned events, and more info on that.

So I will post pics of the NEW mustang when I get home.

Pros: lowish miles
great body, frame, floorpan, etc. No rust!! (I promise, this time."
same style as my other one; interchangeable parts galore!
I4 engine.
Cons: Rear main seal leaks, like crazy.
stalls at likes
Non turbo at the moment.
Automatic; eligible for the T5 swap when I pull the engine for repairs.

Questions: Turbo it?
Put bigger cam in it?

I still gotta get a hold of the other fox body guy and see if he cannot give me some useful tips.

Once again, I am here to learn, not be a thorn in your side. Give me your braaiinnnnsss.....

Note: My experience is VERY limited, and if someone wouldn't mind being my... "sensei" as it were, to teach me the path of rallying enlightenment, I would greatly appreciate it. :x Dont mean to make an arse of myself, I just say what I have heard. Once again, sorry for any inconvenience my... noobness has caused.

First of all: congrats on the new car - may it be less of a rust bucket than the first... :-).

Secondly:

Questions: Turbo it?
Put bigger cam in it?

I think this has been covered - go over your notes again - and/or read BobOfTheFutures thread on his newly aquired Volvo, and read the advice he's getting on where to start.

To recap: Forget about engine for now - if it at least runs... Start just about everywhere else. First and foremost with shell prep and the ever important cage. As you can see in on of the other threads (Honduh) it is expensive, takes a while, and can go horribly wrong...

To put it simple: You can't go on stage without a cage that is up to a certain standard.
You CAN however go on stage with an asthmatic down-on-power engine putting out horsies that reminds you of a rubber band - and you can even finish the race and learn something with it.
So worry about engine MUCH later...

Also - from what I've been picking up on this forum (I don't live in the States - so I'm not covered by this), you're not allowed to have a turbo on the engine as a n00b. Check this thread - it's in here as well, along with why a V8 isn't for you yet either.

If the engine turns and make decent power, holds it's liquids, etc. - leave it...
Prep the shell with all the safety stuff like cage, harnesses, seats, fire extinguisher, etc. etc. Consider STRENGTHENING the shell ... how? No clue - get in contact with someone who knows these cars.... (we don't even have them over here :-)).
Fix all stability issues (brakes, clutch, engine- and gearbox mounts, etc.... all sorts of weird and suspect things WILL start to fail once the car gets driven in anger.
Again: read BobOfTheFuture's thread - someone gave incredibly good advice in here.

Then get on the horn with for example JVL, and get some half decent suspension for it.

Now... forget all about sexiness, paint, bodykits ( - and that is for ever!), etc. - and spend the money on actually getting on stage!

I think its been said before, but contact Mike Hurst and Mark Utecht, they're both in your area and have rallied mustangs (the same mustang, actually) pretty darn fast. They'll give you plenty of direction on what areas of the car need attention. So call and talk and ask questions and listen and take notes. They've probably both been racing for longer than you have been alive.

Here's Mark's (probably way outdated) web page: http://www.mayhemracing.com/main.html
I think Mark is currently building a mustang for scca super touring. Maybe he could use some eager young help? Then you could get some hands-on experience and ask tons and tons of questions while doing it. If the webpage is too outdated, I'm sure Mike Hurst can give you up to date contact info for Mark.

Mike is the technical director for Rally America.
Email address: tech@rally-america.com

Doug Davenport would be a good guy to talk to about any cage work or other prep stuff you may need. He's about an hour north of the cities.
Webpage: http://www.davenportracingusa.com/

Heres Mike and Mark duking it out last year in a 2010 mustang on some stages:

You have two guys who have years of experience rallying mustangs right in your back yard. Take advantage of that. They're both on facebook, so look them up that way too.
