![]() Rally Sprint In A Box What is it? This is a simplified rally, that runs in one day, on one road, that happens with minimal volunteer requirements, minimal overhead, and still gets you out racing on a real forest road. How is that different than any other sprint? Everything has been done before. This type of event is actually very similar to what we did at HyperFest. (Actually, we tested out the simplified time cards there this year.) What is new here is that we've put together all the stuff a new or novice organizer needs to go make an event happen. Land owner introduction letter, budget, check list, time cards, log sheets, equipment inventory, etcetera are all posted online so you can see what is really involved. But to make it easier to digest, we have vastly simplified the structure of the event, removing some of the things we're used to doing at a rally. So registration, tech, paperwork, and other stuff is radically reduced. Is it still racing a rally car down a forest road? Yes, that's exactly what it is. One road, with morning recce. No transits, no stage notes, no route books... just racing. Get your rally car there, and race. Well, you'll have to help a little too. Cost It's all in the posted budget, but roughly we're talking about 10 or 12 drivers at $250 each breaks even. Since you can do multi-driver cars, you only need to find 5 rally cars to make that work. At HyperFest last weekend, about 70% of the cars were multi-driver. Pretty sweet. ![]() But! But! But! You can either focus on why things won't work, or look for solutions. ![]() What's next? We hope that folks find a road near them, and make a rally sprint happen! Structured this way, it's not more difficult than organizing a rallycross. It's really not too hard. We've taken all the parts, put them in a box, and practically gift wrapped them for you. ![]() ![]() The Link Here's the link to more descriptions of the program, all the documents, a list of differences from a normal rally, the event schedule, and so on: http://www.nasarallysport.com/main/RallySprintInABox Grassroots rally. anders, i sent you a PM over on Special Stage last weekend with some thoughts.
this is a very promising concept that has the potential to be a great foundation for a regional rally program. it sounds like they run these in finland but with no codriver. this video is from one of those events:

I fully intend to host a rallysprint in Charleston, SC in the National Forest IF I can get enough people to commit. I've already identified plenty of roads for a fully rally, but a sprint would be a better place to start for the politicians and the environmental folks.

That's the brilliance in this plan. It is easier for new blood to get into the organizational side. It's also cheaper for competitors. In fact, you could have unlicensed cars. You could recruit Chump/Lemons cars with cages that can be legal for rally. This is really what needs to be happening in the regions. 4-6 of these events plus one full stage rally happening in 6-8 regions such that no one has more then 4-6 hours to get to an event would result in a huge growth of the sport.
Drive Friday night after work. Rally all day Saturday. Party with your friends back in town at the hotel bar on Saturday night. Drive home on Sunday. Rallying without using vacation days. |

if it is close enough you wouldnt even need the hotel stay the night before and only need the sat. stay for partying if you choose to. it is too bad chumpcar allows the halo cages and ERW, that renders a lot of those cars ineligible. |

Eric: I would suggest that you go with a State as opposed to National Forest as there have already been inroads made with State Forestry due to SB. I know SETRA stopped doing Hare Scrambles after 34 years in the Francis Marion National Forest due to problems with the bureaucrats/rangers. The Manchester State Forest near Columbia hosts a Hare Scramble every year, and is close to I-95. You may also want to look into some of the plantation areas/riding areas that the bike guys use as well. |

Good news is that the National Forest is managed in the same building as the State forests. Literally, across the hall. So we've got some good contacts in the State forest for Sandblast that we can hopefully draw upon. In addition, I'm a member of the Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce and have been discussing a venture like this with a lot of the fellow chamber members, many of them with the city/governments and they are in full support. So I think I can make it happen in my back yard. |

In the proposed budget I don't see any allowance for onsite standby EMS or first aid support. Is this not required under NASA operation guidelines? This is typically second or third biggest line in the budget and well over $1000 for us. This is a bit of a gray area under CARS as well (proximity and minimum level of coverage) but stage events I'm involved with organising have a dedicated ALS ambulance onsite. (and have needed that level of resource in the past.) We don't do this for our test days, but being a test day the participants are usually more level headed. Once someone can 'win' an event that changes quickly. One of the reasons we've opted for a number of test days over rally-sprints around here is because they are more relaxed and truly need fewer resources to make happen. It also gives teams the chance to test set-ups, note styles, co-driving, driving styles etc. (It has led to fairly regular car swaping, giving rides to your class competitors etc. and a good vehicle for sharing knowledge.) |

So each person gets a total of 12 runs?
If you bring a worker you get 4 runs, lunch, 4 runs, service, 4 runs, maybe work for make-up runs, stage cleanup. If you dont bring a worker you get either (depending on when you pay): 1) 4 runs, lunch, work, service, 4 runs, 4 make-up runs, stage cleanup. or 2)work, lunch, 4 runs, service, work, 8 make up-runs, stage cleanup. Am I following this correctly so far? If you have 15 entries is that 180 passes total for the road? 360 passes for the 30 entry limit? Does each driver run the stage down, turn around, and run it right back up? Or do you drive the stage down, wait for everyone else to drive it down, everyone turn around, and then everyone run it back up? How does that work for multi-driver cars? Driver 2 waits while everyone runs it down and back and then switches with driver 1? Or driver 2 waits while driver 1, and the other 1 driver cars, run it down and back twice, then switch? I think adding on-site medical and road use fees to your sample budget would eat up the example profit pretty quick. And with each driver equaling 12 passes on the road, road use fees might be pretty high compared to $ collected from entry. I think around here road use fees are one of the major costs, but that of course all depends on which roads you use. I like the idea, its just a little confusing to me and maybe a little overly optimistic about the costs. |
