Show me your roads!

Is it the McLean Campground I'm thinking of?
2 miles east of McLean and one mile south of the Trans Canada? Does that still exist and is it still abandoned?
Short, under 3K, route in there if they are passable

Excellent info - Thanks Keith! I hadn't looked into it at all - just responded immediately to Ander's post. This will definitely be something I'll follow up on with the rest of the club exec.

As for roads - McLean campground is going to be up for tender soon, so they didn't want to give us permission to use it for anything until it was sold. I'd love it if our club could afford it - but it's likely going to go for big $$$. We scoped it out last year and it would be awesome - but the only insurance issue might be how close the trees are to the roads. It's in rough shape - but it'd still clean up well I think if the new owner is open to us renting it.

Best option we have are a fairly decent selection of TSD roads in the valley, so it'd just be a matter of finding one that doesn't impact the locals much, then make a deal with the RM to close it off.

With just one road, impact is minimal so I foresee it being WAY easier to get approvals for it. If we can negotiate a per car insurance fee - I think this would be very doable.

I did my first autocross there in 99 or 2000. From a quick search it looks like they still use the place for autocrosses.

I thought I heard the same thing four or five years ago...

But the speeds would also be slow, so the risk presented by the trees would be more to the cars than the participants.

Possibly offer some labour to help clear the roads in exchange for being able to use them? Unless you know the new owner well I'd probably want a written long-term deal on something like that. Winter access, if you guys have access to a truck with a blade on it, would be a lot of fun.

Let me know if you want help getting your approach to the RM together before you start approaching them. The right introduction makes all of the difference in the world and once you make the first impression you can't go back.

The key to the negotiated rate is, likely, a vision for growth. ARMS got it because they presented a plan to train organisers and increase their competitor base wiith the goal of bringing an performance rally back to Atlantic Canada (Rallye Baie des Chaleurs is on their doorstep but still in Quebec)

The danger of the subsudy is that it tempts organisers to run an artificially low entry fee and sets up a bigger jump in cost of competing in stage rallies. As a point of reference, the CSCC is charging $225 per car for our test days and most cars end up running ~40-60km of stage distance in the day. (some much more, some much less) The insurance rate is the same as a rally sprint.

I am sure we could get a bunch of people from Alberta to come out and help.

If I were in NC/VA, I'd look at US Training Center's (f/k/a Blackwater) track in Moyock, NC:

This looks interesting. Place is set up for events. Even has on-site lodging available. Claim over 3 miles of road with a big variety of corners.

I had been thinking of another location for a sprint bt this looks like fun.

You do it, I promise I will compete.

I've been proposing events of this kind for over a decade, believing the possibilities and benefits with such events are huge! The format, or something based on it has the potential to become very successful. Well done NASA!

We almost made one happen once, but rallies got put on hold by the sanctioning body and the event never happened. I'm really glade to see folks looking in this direction and giving it a try.

If my families health issues improve I may have to go in search of roads …

As always IMHO

Hey Wilson, I see your in georgia like me. Have you ever heard of the Big Frog Wilderness Loop? (95 mile dirt and gravel road!).

Daniel:

Sure, but there are other loops in the Chattahoochee closer to you. We play in those woods from time to time.

Good maps here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c5/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPwhQoY6IeDdGCqCPOBqwDLG-AAjgb6fh75uan6BdnZaY6OiooA1tkqlQ!!/dl3/d3/L2dJQSEvUUt3QS9ZQnZ3LzZfME80MEkxVkFCOTBFMktTNVVJNDAwMDAwMDA!/?navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=fsm9_029112&navid=360000000000000&pnavid=null&ss=110803&position=Not and here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c5/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPwhQoY6IeDdGCqCPOBqwDLG-AAjgb6fh75uan6BdnZaY6OiooA1tkqlQ!!/dl3/d3/L2dJQSEvUUt3QS9ZQnZ3LzZfME80MEkxVkFCOTBFMktTNVVJNDAwMDAwMDA!/?navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=fsm9_029111&navid=360000000000000&pnavid=null&ss=110803&position=Not

We'll have to get you together with Mike Hooper who is down your way. In fact, he lived in Canton for a long time and worked for his brother-in-law at Jarco, Inc., but now is at GA Tech and lives in Marietta. I know he gets back to Canton from time to time.

Wilson

Here's a neat little undeveloped subdivision that could make for a fun event: http://www.reynoldsrealty.com/a-sign-of-the-times-new-subdivision-appears-to-be-abandoned-by-the-builders

I found it on google maps but couldn't paste it.

There are probably hundreds in the state.

That's so funny... my parents house is about 5 miles from there and I drive by that "neighborhood" every time I go visit them and it never occurred to me to check it out. Next time I sure will.

BTW, anyone have any experience getting permission and access to using something like that for an organized event?

Some more: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/09/human_landscapes_in_sw_florida.html

If they are county roads, talk to the county (but talk to the local politicians about potential economic impact first, and get them on your side). If they are private, go to the registers office or the online property GIS system for the county/state and find the owners. Some of the ownership on stuff in SW Florida is bound to be unclear.
