PNW people: Would you drive to Moscow, ID for a cheap NASA rally sprint?

Anders' post got me interested in making this happen some time in the fall.

I live in an area with great rally roads, and in particular an area we call Moscow Mountain where I have had success with landowners in organizing and putting on Downhill Mountain bike races.

I feel I would have success in getting a 5 mileish Rally Sprint up and running here to if people were interested.

Here is a snippet of the road I'd like to use.

Hey maybe I'll have a working car by then. After a 2 year layup, I'll damn near go anywhere for anything, but Nov. may be a challenge towing over them there passes...

That is a bit far, how many stage miles? Is there snow there that time of year?

Meh, take the car over, great. Take the van over with a trailer, not so great.

The route in the link goes for 2.6 miles. My proposed route ends at a place called "4 corners" which is in the saddle of a ridgeline. There are roads that go up the ridge to the left and right, and off the back of the mountain. They could easily double the distance. These roads would be insanely easy to secure too.

Real snow here isn't until late November. And the landowners close the access gates after the 11th or 14th or something.

2.6 miles?
It it a drag race or a cone-squish extravaganza. I'd say find a 12 mile stage, do that back and forth 4-5 times

Guys I want to try the Anders approach.
http://www.nasarallysport.com/main/RallySprintInABox

I want to follow his 7 mile maximum rule.
2.6 miles seems like an ok length. This is not a fast road. It's short enough that people could get many passes AND be able to remember much of the course since there wouldn't be any notes supplied, and we don't want to take forever during 2 pass recce to generate notes.

If it's too short I could go down the other side of the mountain or left or right along the ridge.

I think that, if you're putting on one of these sprints, you _really_ have to pack in the miles if you want to regularly attract 'non-locals'. Unless the road is super-duper slow (15-20mph bogey), making the stage longer (but still 7 miles or less) doesn't particularly effect the event timetable - about all it really changes is the need for a few more volunteers.

2.5x12 = 30 miles
4x12 = 48 miles
7x12 = 84 miles!

While I have no doubt that, putting on an event like this in an area that already has lots of drivers and cars locally could have a sustainable # of entries for 30 miles or less, if you're hoping for folks to tow a good distance, you'll have to offer more mileage. I'm aiming for 4+ mile stages - and there's two finished cars local to me, as well as one that would probably get finished for a local event.

I think a better goal (than getting non-locals to show) is getting drivers to share their cars with their navvies. That doubles the number of entries. smiling smiley Leave the "get miles to attract people from far away" plan to the actual rallies. grinning smiley

Paradigm shift, people! smileys with beer

Chris, personally I wouldn't drive 30 miles for a 2.5 mile hunk of road for free.

Hell, I think it is absurdly short the length FULL events go for the amount of days they spread out things for.

2.5 miles @ 60 is 150 seconds
2.5 is a 'sprint' but a rallysprint doesn't have to be short, it can be longer, =The essence is the single stage and low manpower needed.

I'd advise right up to the limit (which was doubtless pulled out of thin air).

Chris, maybe a few more miles would be good. But as long as we get to run all day long, I'll be there either way! smiling smiley

Cool. The consensus is longer. So now the question is would you come to Moscow for a 5 mile sprint you could run all day?

If you got 12 runs done, and it was only 3pm... shoot, do another four! The basic idea is still "Race all day till it's dinnertime." grinning smiley
