so i've seen threads on how to prep the car, and how to prep for rallycross, but my searches for "rally prep" or "spare parts list" are coming up shy...if someone has a link... Now, i've put together an unlimited budget "spare parts list" but wanted feedback from people that have been on the stage of... what doesn't need to be on this list, and what is "essential", or "would never be able to be replaced at an overnight service". or maybe if folks just want to share what they already have, that'd be great too:
oh, as for the door panels and stuff, i didn't find anything in the nasa rules that said "thou shalt replace these if they rip off"...so if anyone can come to a definitive conclusion on that...
Thanks, Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 08/02/2011 07:34PM by supasixfo. |

Struts and shocks? <- very likely to need these.
Turbo? <- very likely to need if running anti-lag Clutch? <- very likely to need this Diff? <- somewhat likely to need this... might need 3 depending what you drive Transmission? <- big teams replace them all the time Engine? <- big teams somtimes replace, sometimes rules don't allow Windshield? <- can't continue without one Window nets? <- use as replacement side windows Tires and rims? <- it's sometimes the most obvious stuff you forget My spares package is currently pretty depelted, but aside from your bodywork list, I have carried all of the above at some point, and for Targa last year we did carry all of the above. And we're by no means a no expense spared team... after review that isn't true, we've never carried a windshield or window nets, and we don't run an oil cooler or serp belt or acd fluid. My rule is, if you have it, can fit it in the trailer and could in some possible way, change it, then take it. Alternatively... just drive the car to the event with 2 spares and you're good to go! -Martin. |

What ever your crew can change in a half hour-hour. I dont focus to much on body panels. Big hamer (5 lb hand sledge), fluids, spare tires, zip ties, fuses, suspension components (the stock stuff), belts hoses, alt, dist, starter, brake components, mounts, radiator, axles, a spool of wire for tying things up. And of course the most important- the spare key. My budget and crew do not do the whole spare engine, tranny deal, if it gets that far, we're packing it up.

Well at least I'm getting something done ahead of schedule with this project. ![]() Appreciate this post. Between now and when the Keyboard Rallyist Mobile fires back up, I'm sure I'll have made several trips to the local yard for this and that. (And thumb's up to the fellow Mitsubishi man. Yup, the amount of stuff you take is definitely tied to the ability to actually use it. I never took a transmission or engine or diff.
One thing that won't be on most lists is a couple random pieces of metal. Not huge pieces... maybe a 6"x6" heavy sheet metal and a 12" by 2" 1/8" or something. Just whatever random pieces are laying around the garage. Why? Who knows why. But sometimes something gets bent and if you had a piece of metal you could drill two holes in, then you could mount/zip tie/bolt/wedge/weld that into place to make it last another four stages. It's the kind of thing that makes NO sense until you're looking at a broken part and then you look at the boxes and boxes of stuff behind you and all of them are filled with nice, clean, prepped car parts. ![]() Anders Grassroots rally. thanks all - this is really good information to know as we get ready for BRS. i think what i'll end up doing is separating stuff into a "can be done in 20 minute service", "can be done in 45 minute service, and "can be done overnight" bucket.
I imagine in the overnight bucket we'll split off the "if this happens, this would also be broken and it's time to crack open a beer bottle and enjoy the rest of show" category. which i imagine is going to be dictated by our budget anyway. @DR1665 Thanks, hope to see you on the east coast w/ the galant sometime soon ![]() |

I split it into 3 tote tubs.
Front of car. If it goes forward of the doors, it is in this tub Rear of car. Same as above Service supplies. Nuts, bolts, fluids, cleaners ect The lid of each tub clearly states what is in them. I would say that if a part is broken, I don't care how long it takes to change. If I can change it and not get time barred, I am going to do it. If I don't think I can, I am going to try like hell. If I can continue without changing, then so be it. On my first rally, I almost DNF'd because at the start of the 3rd stage, when Jenne rolled down her window it unplugged the motor, and it would not go back up. It will be something very stupid that can get you. |

While building and participating in rock crawling, I made fastidious lists of parts to bring on the trail. Alternators, starters, transfer case (left on the trailer), axles, jumper cables/welding rod, steering assembly. Invariably, I always broke that which I didn't have the spare part to fix. Finally, I just stopped bringing spares but lots of trail currency (cold beer) to barter with. I figure rally works the same way. In a hour-long service (or less) I can't imagine too much serious can be fixed anyway.

Murphys law dictate that the second you bring a spare something that has broken x times before, it will never break again... ever! Now something that you don't have a spare for will break... Just last week my navi and I were packing the car for a small outing that doesn't count for anything, but is a helluva lot of fun anyway. We were pressed for time with packing tools and so on (I had had a bunch of issues getting parts), so I was like: "I wont bring the tools... gotta borrow if need be..." My navi was fine with this, but when I grabbed the two boxes of VR6 CV joints he looked puzzled. So I said: "Well I'm bringing these just in case". And he went "But after converting to VR6 CV joints we haven't broken a single one of those". Then I had to answer: "Yeah... that's because I've been bringing two spares to every single event since converting..." So naturally logic dictates: pack a spare car and you will never crash or have a failure... ![]() Brgrds Brian ![]() Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/04/2011 01:50AM by wildert. |
