omfg, a tow vehicle?
August 04, 2011 07:05PM
saw this and i'm super interested : http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=988899

he says he got maybe 12 mpg but isn't sure.. I've done 2 , 1500 mile round trips on my friends truck while getting 9 mpg sad smiley sad smiley it sucked... but meh putting gas in 2 cars is just as bad and you have no tow home if you break (did that for Idaho)

anywho I'm thinking i should jump on that as it looks like a steal.

can anyone think of some glaring reason why i should avoid this truck?

Glad I got your attention with that. If I were looking for a tow rig, that would be high on my list. Yeah, it's no Power Stroke Diesel, but it will burn regular 87 and it has AC. Plus it's a 4x4 and long bed (you can sleep in it with a shell). Do eeeeeet.......

Trucks make terrible service rigs.

You can get a cargo van that's half as old and has half the mileage for that price.

The early TBI trucks really lack the power compared to the later Vortec motors. I had a 95 like that with an auto and usually got around 13ish on the road. The 96 and newer version has way more power and torque for the same economy(or lack of). We now have a 96 F-250 460 which really pulls the freight, effortlessly. Still no mileage but it pulls. Ford did the injection right from the start, no throttle body bs (I''m actually a Chevy guy tho).

Price is ok, towing with a 5 speed sucks, 4x4 is nice if you hit snow in the passes towing to a rally, bit more maintainance .

Vans are much nicer, more room for everyone. No 4x4 unless converted. Rare to find a Chevy van with a big block, fair amount of Ford vans with 460s .

The shuttle bus option looks pretty good some days. Lots of diesels, really heavy duty, massive room and some bargains to be had.

Can take two at a time and the wench will help you get your load off.

I've been told the downside with those and most smaller box trucks is they're geared for city driving, so you're stuck going cross-country at 55-60.

12K for that volvo and trailer is a steal...you sure it's not missing a 0?

Van is great if it's dedicated to rally. If you want a general purpose vehicle you can use for other stuff a truck is great... I use my truck every weekend to go get gocereas with the kids... wouldn't if I had a van. Kinda hard to load the van up with brush/junk and take it to the dump... at leat if it's full of all your rally gear. I use a truck and enclosed trailer, I leave the trailer loaded with most of the rally stuff, most of the time, which I presume those of you that use a van do as well.

I've used trucks all the time, but went to a crew cabs in '85 so there is room for crew in one vehicle; no need to run 2 vehicles to the event. I prefer trucks to vans in order to keep the gas and oil and such away from the passenger area, and a barrier between both in case of any crash. A cap on a truck is a must and a cheap one works fine. Vans are easier to get stuff in and out though, as you have headroom over a P/U truck bed and simple cap.

Diesel if you keep one for a long time (like me and JVL apparently). Gas Ok if you're going to keep it a short while.
