Mark, Thanks for keeping an eye out and helping the crew. Their first time and were "thrown into the wolves".

Yes I was rather amused that the fellow was from NYC, and out on a 4000' mountain in the middle of nowhere at night; driving a van and towing a trailer for the first time in his life. But I refrained from making any smart-ass remarks. And, besides, they were very pleasant, good to get along with, and sincerely appreciated the help. Helped pass the time at the repeater location on a long night.

I can think of just one other person who would have notified crews at service besides the CRO......call me if you want to try to figure it out.

Mark B.

Alex,

You should be able to pick up a used car hauler like my Carson for $1500-1700. Get electric brakes on both axles if you can (you can add them after the fact).

Over here the only car diesels have been

A) Mercedes all years back to 180D
cool smiley very few MkI VW "Rare-bits" 1,6 n.a
C) Peugeot beginning with the 504, most n.a. some turbos. Some 505
D) a very few MkII Golves some with turbo, maybe '85 or 86 only
E) some horrible 'merikun V8 vomit I dun't know--don't want to.
F) some current VWs---very very rare..

according to the internet VW sold about 52 thousand TDI's in the US last year (out of ~11 million light auto sales) mine's in the shop... again.

audi (VW), BMW, and Merc are the only others but why would you?

I know a couple guys who do out here on the east coast. Last Ditch Racing out of Maine and Luke Sorensen's Saab team. They seem to be fussy, but get good mileage and are GREAT when they're right, which sounds like most German stuff. But I hear of frequent "limp mode" incidents which make them about as fast as an old Mercedes 240D with 666k miles.

I wish there was a 4 cylinder turbo diesel 4wd Toiletta Brocoma and/or Sienna (with a stick shift) available!

Nissan has no history of collaboration with MB so you made me look. If these are the vans http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2011/02/first-drive-2012-nissan-nv-series-vans.html it is quite interesting. Gas V8s only , no diesel. That seems odd as Nissan has had a decent diesel forever it seems.

If only there was a way that I could un-see that. It looks like a pick-up, minivan, and nisson cube had a three-way (and not the cool kind).

I wonder what the length of the cargo box is with the cab pushed back like that.

I fit a MK3 golf in the back of my van, from in front of the firewall all the way back. Length was over 9 feet.

The 6'3" height would be nice, however.

Also, on brakes, one reason that US needs bigger vehicles is cars are rated less in the US than they are in Europe. Same vehicle, lower tow rating. And if you're unlucky enough to get in an accident and have exceeded the US tow rating...good luck.

Yeah what the heck, I just looked that up and a 6 cylinder Subaru outback is rated at 3000 in the US and 3968 in the UK.

Yeah look at all the old Japaese "mini-trucks" in years past.
Amerikanski rating "1/4 ton"
Same thing in Thailand 2 tons

Por que, Juanito? I hear you say....

US Customs Duty on all "Trucks" over 1/4 ton from all countrys except America's hat, the Great White North, the Soviet Respublik of Canada, was a whopping 25%... From Canada: duty free

Under 1/4 Ton: 3.2%, same as cars and car parts.
POOOF hey presto the same thing that was GAWD KNOWS WHAT became all 1/4 ton or 2 dirt bikes and gear, yeah right.

My new rig its a 89 ford 350 7.3 non turbo diesel 5 speed! so far I love it it need some work but nothing
big should tow a trailer no problem trailer brakes already wired up.

My old rig was a 454 4 speed with 3.21 rear end and I blew up the rear end and that gear is no
longer made and with the bad gas mileage it made sense to move to a diesel. The old chevy tho
had some serous balls though it would go 90 with no problem and i have had it up to 13000 lbs
with a load in the bed and towing a car! She was good to me RIP!!
