I see you lurking! I had a long and fun talk with one of the many Perma-lurkers here who lives in deepest darkest Corn-etty-slut who is actually planning in advance to deal with the hugely variable costs in starting out. Now the problem is fining the guy a acceptable starter Xratty or 240.. he's ridden moto-cross and owned a KDX200 so he undestands the metaphor of aiming at KDX performance/reliability/cost target.. But we don't want to start him in a car with rotten sills... Also i suggested he hook up with Tim Chevalier up by fawkin Wooosta.. Sop all youse NE guys and that means from North Caroline upwards, lets scratch the head where we can find a derelict cheap---but unrusty car? Andrew, any ideeerz? And Andrew, been down to Hollands lately? Any Supar-rah diffs out there? I has plenty of 4.3s w LSDs but UPS and Fed-ex have gone up drastically... I just sold my primo low-mile 85 XR4 to Chevalier today...he'll probably be looking for some suspenders for the new recce car in the spring, you're welcome.
I've been poking around looking for a LeMons car candidate for a few months now (went to the auction where I picked up the low-mile XR4 actually looking for a LeMons XR4, but this car was so clean and I had room on my credit card I couldn't pass it up), the only other thing I've actually gone and LOOKED at was a SLAAB 900 SPG that was banana shaped. I'm at the point where I'm looking for some cheap seat time (in something faster than first or second gear), and LeMons looks to be the cheapest thing out there short of drunk street racing in a school zone. Rally certainly isn't it any more. Have to admit, if I suddenly came up with $10k to blow on a rally car, I'd be more tempted to go Volvo, just because I still see at least one on the road every day in my travels. XR4s I'm lucky to see one around in a month (other than the one on jackstands in my garage or the ones up the street at Sanborn's). The XR4's are getting a little rare around here (especially ones without gaping holes in the rockers), serviceable Volvos can still be had for $1,000. If the guy is in Connect-a-snut, he should probably try to find Ascona73 (Bob Legere) or John Groo. Sanborn does have a flat black 88 XR4 with fiberglass Cozzie-style body panels on it available...shell is kind of Mad Max like, but not rusty! |

Oh, I haven't been to Hollands since....I think spring 2010. Kinda hard to haul children around in the yard, and I tend to have at least one in tow most of the time.
I have one Supra diff sitting on the shelf, waiting for me to blow the 7" XR4x4 unit to kingdom come (or somebody to offer me silly money for it, Tim C. has first refusal on it if he needs one for one of his cars). And somebody is trying to sell me a $500 running 5 speed XR4 for a Lemons machine....hmmmm. |

So whaddya think that a flat black Xratty shell could be had from your neighbor in Wilton? He seemed to think his things were worth a lot. Can you make any discreet inquires? Ironically I was at Groo's yesterday. He's cleaning house! Been getting rid of old cars for a few months now. I talked him into getting back into a rally car, he's got a rust free Civic shell just begging for a cage. He says Black River Stages 2012 is the target. Anyway, are we looking for strictly RWD car or is a simple, light FWD car also a possibility? I'm thinking VW, SE-R, or Honda in that regard. |

Why would I be discreet? It isn't going to be cheap, definitely not a three-figure ride, otherwise he'll just slap some plates on it and flog it for a while. |

Well he seemed to understand the idea that sooner or later he'd want to be able to to actually upgrade gears in the box and upgrade the diff and choose final drive ratios by spending a few hundred bucks now and then versus thousands and a full teardown of the box for each thing....so the ability to just bang in a diff --without removing the gearbox and opening it up, and then later bang in final drive---without removing and opening up the box again and later just shoving in a tough--for us-- virtually unbreakable box means that a rwd platform is immensely more practicle.. Rememeber! He's spoiled by strong reliable moto-cross bikes where you don't even have to think about reliability of the motor or drive train.....and repeated drive shaft or CV failures, or bending rear beams continually for no competitive advantage is not something he HAS to deal with if he chooses wisely in the first place. So RWD, preferably with a bigger motor, and a proven well balanced platform, with decently quick steering available or better, stock. A 2.3 with a big enough bore to use big valve would mean mo powers from less work and thus less cost and known reliable is a plus. And cheap. Preferrably rust free is the floor and especially the sills.. I just got an email confirming a cheap round headlight 240 volvo in Richmond VA---near ideal....just gotta confirm the price. OK, I've just been stupid and committed to buying another XR4 the DAY after I sold one...but since this one costs about 6% of what I sold the last one for (and I'm splitting it with somebody else)...but I have a line on a red 89 that might go for cheap money. And it has the headlight kit like Sean's (former and new?) rally XR.
I'm going to LeMons this blue 87...cheaper than rally...I think. |

Checked out the red 89 tonight, I unfortunately didn't get there until after dark, and the car was parked in the grass and it was wet. Non sunroof car, rockers definitely need attention. Don't think it's moved in five years. Has Ford lableled Koni adjustable struts on it. Probably could be had for $500-600, I'm guessing. He also has a ton of parts, Autopower cage, several intercoolers, driveshafts, fiberglass faux cozzie front bumper, etc. Didn't see many of the parts, as they were stored in a different location.
I got a couple photos, had a few more from a previous email. http://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c228/fiascorally/jonhowardxr4/ I'm trying to decide if I should grab the car for another LeMons candidate and his whole parts stash and get back in the evilBay business for a while... |
