Doo Wops 2012
September 29, 2011 05:46PM
So I was just reading over on specialstage about how no one is organizing Doo Wops for 2012. I also am going to make the assumption that Olympus in September will still try to use the Doo Wops roads though that might not be a good assumption. I remember in 2009 there was some grumbling overheard about Olympus using Doo Wops roads and that having a national event on the roads would eventually have a negative impact on Doo Wops. Somebody should step up and maybe start with just a Rallysprint in a Box format running Brooklyn a few times for the first year while you learn the ropes. No nonsense, just four runnings of Brooklyn for as cheap as possible for all the locals.

Does it make more sense to close four roads in one day to rally or to close each road once for one weekend over four weekends of the year?

It must have 4 pass Recce or I'm not coming.
No of the serious team will either without recce, free recce vehicles and a reach around.

Another interesting idea would be to make it a two day rally sprint in a box and run both Brooklyn and Palix each (one day for each, obviously) 4 times in a row. 8 stages, Only one transit, yes another night, but let them do recce if they want.

The schedule could be something like

Show up and register 10am

Tech starts at 11am, goes till 2pm.

Lunch BBQ/Party (pot luck style, everyone brings food and such) 2-3:30pm

Recce 3:30pm (open)

Parc Expose 5pm

First car out, 6:30pm Volunteers shouldn't be out too late, no moving around for them, easy to keep them supplied with bottled water and snacks, etc.

Then the next day, start earlyish. (but bear in mind moving to palix)

Recce 9:30 (open)

Parc Expose at 11am

First car out at 12am

4 runs later lunch/dinner/afternoon tea party and awards (again, pot luck style)

Then everyone goes home in theory before 6pm on sunday.

Two days, no jemba notes to buy, 2 days in a hotel comfortably, 1 if you like mornings, two parties (one obviously no drinking, lol), recce for those who want it....

I can;t remember the rally sprint in a box layout if it included recce or not, but just having a time limited open recce seems like it would prohibit GROSS misuse of the time. I just seem to remember step one, cut a hole in the box, and step two, put your rally car in the box?

Timmy...do the math better...fuckin waste of college again. FCO at 6:30 pm ? Already beyond dark, could easily be snow or freezing rain. Wheres's tech, parc expose, lunch ? Brooklyn is what 7 milesish or a bit less. The either a turn around or a long transit thru Smith Creek and North River . So say 25 cars...last car is slow so maybe 25 minutes plus the last cars stage time of say 10 minutes. So what...35 minutes per run, plus sweep time, plus tow time (someone will go off and they get 30 minutes before time bar), plus transit or turn around time, plus advance time. So hour a stage or more, maybe 2...hmmm, doesn't sound like much fun. Throw in a service and we're at or past midnight, in March, in the woods at some elevation. OBTW both Brooklyn and Palix are public roads, gravel but public. So we're going to close Brookly from about 4:30 until midnite or so. This organizing thing gets a bit complicated doesn't it?

Sundays schedule gets a bit easier and could work as Raymond can handle all the requirements being everything is centralized. You still have a decent transit or turn around some maybe 45 minutes to an hour per stage plus problems...

Alan can likely tune the numbers better (thats what he does very well) but I think I'm close. Then you need to go RA or you'll lose money. (If they don't change the pricing matrix).

The good news is both Grays Harbor and Pacific counties have been very friendly fee wise. Still Ron Barker lost money 2 years ago on DooWops. At best it's a break even event. Ray spent massive hours working on that event. I drove him all over the place, spent hours in meetings. I don't know anyone else willing to put in the time, or that has the time.

Also I'll mention I doubt the name is up for grabs, any new organizer is going to have to pass muster (that leaves out Mr. Wonderful and his henchmen).

You do realize that this is exactly the format that the Doo Wops used for the first couple of years, right? Only we weren't using the Brooklyn Tavern stage back then. The first Doo Wop rallysprint in 1988 used the Bozy Creek stage run 3 times with your worst run thrown out and a 4th "fun run" where you could take a sponsor or crew person or somebody for a ride.

McQuade and I keep yapping about using Palix for a couple of coef 1s in the summer and/or a hill climb somewhere...course we've been discussing this for several years already....

Pico can be used once a year. That is actually City of Montesano owned. The road bed is not very good and wet weather would have some serious expense to patch it back up. Dry weather and 4 runs with a divisional field is hard to guess as to damage.

Crane Creek would likely come with serious road fees. Ray had a great relationship with the tribe but now they charge a pretty susbtantial fee for the roads.

Palix however is like an EASY button for a small event. My favorite road currently. With the town, parking, service, restaurants all a 1/2 mile from the stage it rocks. Road is solid, community is friendly, costs should be minimal....and I'm sure a potluck could be had.

In all likely hood DW is memories. It was Ray's passion, we helped because of our affection and dedication to Ray. To take the event over without him here just isn't the same. Now it's work.

There is room for another event and different organizer. I'd guess the roads could be used in some fashion, certainly help and guidance is close by.

I feel priveleged to have run the event at all, and don't blame anyone for not trying to keep it going. I just hope that some of the roads can be used in some way or another. Any excuse to go sideways on any of the doowop roads will be taken advantage of.

One of my favorite new roads. I would love to see a rally sprint or two so I might be able to afford to take the car out again

Well thats kind of been the plan. Maybe with Olymous being moved we can get enough energy to do it for you guys.

I think it'd be pretty fun . The road is closed, no real intersections, not a massive drain on volunteers.

So would people prefer run the stage and transit back on tarmac or turn around and run back? It'd probably be 20 cars or so. The turn around wouldn't be too awful. The transit on pavement is maybe 20 or so.
