Capri. Easy to keep running, ENDLESS mod-a-bility, easy upgradability.

The V6s in USA Capri were dogs as the V6s go stock.
The 2600 (90x66.8mm bore and stroke) and the 2800 (93x68) were 8:1 and 8.7 compression respectively and had weeeniest 37 0r 38 intake and 31 exhaust valve, and were strangles with the 32/36 progressive Weber.
The biggest--only significant difference was 2,6 had only 2 exhaust ports with 2 cylinders sharing one outlet same as the Ford V4 1700 from which it gre out of (and shared every single part except the longer cam got 4 cam bearings)
The 2800 V6 got 3 exhaust ports: 2 ganged and then a third.

And people loved them.

As soon as Ford did the 2800 on other markets, they gave them significantly larger 42mm in and 36mm exhaust. With 9.2 comp and a synchronous opening 38/38 DGAS Weber they made a decent 138-160 hp
vs barely 100 for the US version

I've built V4s for daily drivers since the mid 80s with SAME combustion chamber and 42/36 valves at 10.6-10.8 and the manual choke 38/38 DGMS
that are dead reliable and get low 30s mpg at 70 cruise (and that's with Saabs 4.88 final drive 4.2 overall top gear ratio--lots of revs)

A 2.9 V6 from a Ranger would fall into place and the 5 speed box would be a nice thing....Injected and geared right it'd be fast and thrifty.

Nothing wrong with the chassi a few better links can't fix. 1st class rally suspension can be had in UK: inverted Bilstein coilovers were OEM on hotter capris, common as dirt on Flea-bay UK.

Far more easy to make a light Capri be fun than almost anything else....
except maybe a 240T

And in NORTHERN Europe Minis with a little work were hot-rods at least n the 70s. Everybody that I knew that had 'em modded 'em...

But yes (groan) in NORTH America yes the GTI was the first mass popular "hot little car".....I didn't realise we were speaking so parochially.

Thanks guys... sadly

the 142 was a bust... POS for too much $$
the subies and I just don't mix for good fuel economy... wrx + me = 21mpg obs + me = 22mpg
Saab 96 sounds like a blast! Where do i find one on the cheap?
Sad about the 99's.. buddy of mine had one in highschool and it was a hoot!! and much better looking than the 900's :-P
Did someone say MINI!! YES PLEASE! ;-)

I'm going to continue to look around.. closing on a house end of next month so i'm holding on to my pennies... but if you see something let me know.

Thanks ALL

Wouldn't a nice warmed up V6 be a hoot?
I have NEVER seen anybody do anything creative with the V6 and its such a candidate..

Much better to ditch that boat anchor and get a used SOHC Pinto from some dirt racer with about 250hp, cheap money these days.

No idea, and the seller didn't mention a name, but I have an inkling of who it may be...

I'm going to check out a 1991 Audi 200 20V Avant tonight. Says clutch pedal broken, but Steve thinks he's one of their customers and that it needs a new clutch master.

If it's the slave it's a bit of a pain to get to. The early cars had a habit of punching the the pedal mount through the firewall kinda like the old rabbits. I'm not sure when they took care of this but it could be worth looking at
