I think the enforcement of it now varies based upon competitors. Most of us don't care. Run competitively against someone like Ole Holter, who apparently knows the rulebook inside out and will use it to gain any competitive advantage he can, and see if you can get away with it. Nothing against or singling out Ole, just first person that came to mind that I've seen inquiries/protests on the board from. Ironically, also saw at least one protest when he was riding with Iorio for them dicking around in controls to get an extra dust minute. Don't know outcomes from either though since didn't involve me or our team...

I've had codrivers ask me after provisionals have been posted, "Do you want to move up a position?" When that position is the difference between $500 and nothing...it's tempting.

If the rule as written is not followed, why not rewrite it to match current practice?

I hear a Canadian National was just won by a competitor who claimed to have seen "viscous" cows on the stage so the stage was thrown....It seems that the guy was so shocked at the herd of cows that he was unable to use the steering wheel to guide the car around them.

None of the Zero cars saw cows, none of the following competitors saw cows,
Nobody knows the cows names.

But RULES ARE RULES!.

What about cows in the control zone?

Worker and competitor safety being paramount...you definitely cannot check under the hood of a cow in the control zone.

Not exactly true.
The last stage was transited because of significant risk of cattle on the stage. No stages were 'thrown.' (which I take to be throwing the results of a stage that had been successfully run.)

Well, he made it cleanly through the first pass of the stage, but was concerned with the level of risk in repeating the stage.

Untrue.

Also untrue.
The crews from the top three cars expressed concerns about the cattle on the stages.

Again, not strictly true. They do wear ID tags and I can assure you the rancher who owns them knows who he has and would miss one if it got carried off on the front end of a rally car.

But rules have nothing to do with the organiser's decision to cancel a stage, or teams appealing to the organisers to cancel a stage.

I'll tell my friends in the Zero car they are filthy liars.

But first, name the cows responsible.

A shame the steering on the 3 top cars stopped working.

If they told you there were no cows to be seen on Helmer. Then I'll tell my friends in the Zero Car they are liars for you. Cows were seen, and reported, all weekend on that road. I was listening to net control (something you can do if you're actually at events) and was about 800m from the end of the stage for the first pass.

That said, if they [0] said they didn't see cows when they cleared the stage, I'd believe them. I'm reasonably sure I heard timing and 000 report cows on stage. I didn't make notes as I didn't expect an exam. Don't remember Ron talking about them though but cows on Helmer aren't exactly unusual. The number and curiosity of them was unusally high from what I heard.

Just to confirm what Keith says, I have been a steward for 3 events that included Helmer and I spent time at the finish control for that stage for 2 of those 3 events. Cows are **frequently** a problem towards the southern end of the stage.

But I have never seen a cow enter the finish control there ...

One time in a particularly long control, I noticed one of my tires was REEEEALLY low. Ecrew was there with a compressor. After seeking permission from competitors behind me, I sneaked in a bit of air.

Phew, that feels better. I've carried that dark secret with me for far too long. Tonight I will sleep well for the first time in months.

No. It will allow clusterfucks in controlled areas that have a bunch of volunteers of varying previous experience standing around.
