GO with a good grippy tire. Rally tires on pavement are fun, but not quick unless it rains. In the wet, they are pretty good. Also, you will destroy them pretty quick. And yes, I have done mixed surface, at the Seattle round of the GRC. Even on dirty tarmac, those rallycross specific tires flat hooked. They are alot like a cut race slick. If I did it again, I would run some V710's or the like.

Seems what I'm going to do is run the well used slicks, if there are horrible problems in the dirt, or if it rains I'll use the gravel tires.

No sense in getting more slicks if Pikes Peak will be limited to 50 people... Why can't this Rally-X event just be all dirt? Argg!

Edit; Suppose I'll spy what the others in Modified AWD are running when I get there... And Dave, could run the car w/ 2 drivers... I know you have the capabilities, and what would be better than a 1990 Eagle Talon beating up an EVO IX... Pipedream anyhow, look forward to meeting you smiling smiley

Most likley going to run in the Evo if the offer stands...afterall, its what I'm used to, but this one will make boost below 5000rpm smiling smiley This car will be running snows...or I could bring a set of tires that were "very similar" to what the factory ford guys used at PPIHC in 2009.

Found this with a quick youtube search:

Surface looks sooo lose to me, but the tarmac looks overly tight - like way tighter than any slalom at an auto-x. Now I remember part of the reason I gave up on rallyx. LOL

The last time I ran with the club I used 3rd gear on a 3 or 4 gate slalom entering the finish cones, but most of the course was so tight if you got more than 20 degrees sideways, you were hitting cones. 2-3 other drivers creamed the timing equipment spinning thru the finish that day. I also picked up a cone penalty on the start line...

Back when I was first trying out rally-x, our courses were sooo tight, like if you used 2nd gear, the safety director made changes to slow things down. sad smiley After a season of that I volunteered to help with course design and usually set cones on the inside of the corners and if you wanted to go 40' wide, you were free to do so...and lose time. LOL

Slicks are fine on hard packed gravel, especially after it has been swept. Then the surface is really compacted and acts like concrete anyway. I've seen competitive advantage at rallyx events on that type of surface with slicks versus rally tires.

Ours are kinda the opposite. If you drop into 1st gear, it's because you screwed up.
