I want to Co-Drive, but im new.
November 19, 2011 02:16AM
So in addition to driving, i would like to try my hand at co-driving. Considering it might be a good way to make more events per year since i wont have to maintain and keep my car. But, being a new co-driver, im not 100% sure how to go about finding my first seat. Especially since im not exactly useful.

I have volunteered before and organized with the Idaho Rally for the last two years. So i know more or less whats going on.

I plan on learning via Dan Norkus when im back from the desert and practice on some old stage roads we have route books for.

I also know that i can except to pay mostly all of the entry fee for the event. But i would still have to find someone not too concern about victory.

If you pay entry fees you'll find a ride.

Try and get your hands on some in-car that you can clearly hear the co-driver in and the notes that go along with the video. Start out by listening to the notes as if you were the driver, then as you get comfortable try to read along with notes and then once you aren't fumbling your words you can mute the sound and have a go at it yourself. While not the real thing this will help you get up to speed. Go and drive those stages with Danny as well but safety first so that means recce speeds only which often times can be harder than at pace.

Use your experience as a driver when delivering notes. You know when you want to hear them. Start with that then use the feedback from your driver to adjust for their preference.

Also keep in mind that reading the notes is a small part of being a co-driver. You are using everything at your disposal to make the team go faster, safer. Knowledge of the car, knowledge of your drivers strengths and weaknesses, competitors times, knowledge of the rules, the schedule. Your goal is to allow the driver to think of nothing else but driving faster.

i have been memorizing the Jemba notes, and the degrees of turn picture they have since its an interesting reference for driving. Seems like that will cross over well.

I suppose ill dive into some light rule book reading as well.

Paul Eklund's Primitive Rally Racing School in the Portland area of Oregon offers a co-driving class.

I took it a couple of years ago and learned a lot. My instructors were Kathryn Hansen and Ben Bradley - both excellent teacher. It's cheap, too, at only $85.

Yeah save yer money, just remember this and everything is fine.
Hold your hand up like this and it makes a L for left

By logical elimination the other way must be 'Right'

See? Not much to it.

And remember in this election year coming up:
You're not right if you're not Left.

There is so much more to it than calling corners. As a driver I fully expect my co-driver to babysit me. Speed limits, routes, rules, check-in times and procedures.

Dan Norkus is the best of the best. You are in good hands.

Worm...the co-driver trump card.

Doesn't hurt that he's a nice guy to boot.

I still got some time to go, but he's the one I base my notes reading style from the most. Watched A LOT of videos of him to get some things down.

Also helps that he's ran just about every rally in the country so he's got experience in everything.

That and photographic memory. Partner that with his first co-driver role(gas and brakes) being with his twin brother driver (steering) far before the legal driving age and you have an advantage so large that you feel like filing a protest. grinning smiley
