Physical tests in Vierumäki 21-22th of October
I have mentioned earlier about belonging to the rally training. In October it was time to the bi-annual physical tests in Vierumäki sports training center. The Sports Institute of Finland supports professional sports and Vierumäki is the place where it's easy to test athletes.

The two days basically held rowing with a gas a mask on until you drop and the normal push ups etc other physical tests. In addition to tests everybody had discussions with the coaches about the past year in general and about the plans for the 2012 season.

The two days basically started with the rowing test. There you sit on the normal rowing machine. In addition to that you get a mask(think fighter pilots mask and you get the picture) on your face with a tube going to a machine which analyzes your exhaling gases and calculates how well your body can utilize oxygen. In rallying the physical fitness helps on long stages and on rallies lasting several days. The test itself was as fun as you can imagine. You row all the time except every three minutes the pace is lifted to a higher level and somebody takes a blood sample from your finger. You continue this as long you can...

Sheesh.

Fitness helps everything. It helps me more the older I get.

No need to be crazy about it and ride a bike 200 miles a week or go to the gym 7 days a week however...

I'm pretty sure two of my three injuries this spring/summer were made worse because I went to the gym 5 days a week during the winter. And didn't do enough range of motion/stretching/yoga type shit and strengthened all muscles but they also go tighter so stretching them became easier.

Most likely. It's easier to over train than most people think. You really don't need to do more than 20-30 mins of lifting, for example, in a session, although, most people are like OMG GYM FOR 3 HOURS YO.

Although, I'm a big fan of mountain biking, climbing, and either multi joint lifts or crossfit style workouts. Things that arent isolated workouts.

My gym use was limited to an hour and had to have at least half that in the sauna after. Typical routine would be pair two body weight exercises as a set usually mismatched, IE, prisoner squat and pushups, do three sets of 15 reps each with about 30 seconds rest between, then do a different set, repeat 4 times then hop on recumbant bike (easiest to read a book while riding) and do 20 minutes, 5 minutes warm up then 1 minute high intensity followed by 2 minute cool down and do that 4-5 times and a few minutes cool down. Now that I'm working from home and making 1/3 the money I won't pay for gym membership so don't go. Need to find a new solution though...

I found a spin bike on craigslist for pretty cheap... It IS fairly annoying to read a book on, though. Maybe try something like that?

Build a pull up bar in the shop? Chairs for dips, inverted pushups. Then just do body weight stuff? I'm mainly doing that now, as gyms are expensive, haha

work out out every weekend. 12 oz at a time.

the problem with doing 12oz curls, is that it only weighs 12 ounces on the first rep. its all downhill from there. i try to get past this problem by doing 40oz curls. well 40 ounces plus the weight of the paper bag. if yer gonna be ghetto, embrace it.

I just work hard every day, and eat right, don't smoke, and don't drink daily. Works pretty good.

Stuck with working behind a computer means you have to actively find ways to be active. I wish I would have played some sport beyond the age of 10. I keep thinking of joining a rec hockey league (only sport I played) but don't have the moolah to buy all the required gear.
Diet is super important in my book. I can't remember the last time I ate fast food. Last week I ate home cooked meals every single meal.
