first time driver, Looking for co-driver. Idaho Rally 2012
December 25, 2011 07:12AM
Well after helping organize the event for two years, ill be finally racing in it. First time stage driver though. Dan Norkus is likely driving this event otherwise i would have called dibs on him since he lives about 5 miles from me. So would be willing to co-drive? I plan on covering the event entry fees. You would just have to get out to Idaho. We can figure something for sleeping arrangements and the like.

Car is an 82 Rx7, with a terraphone and terratrip. Doug's old car just revamped.

wasnt sure HOW far out to start looking, but since i have little repertoire lead time cant hurt

x2. I'm working on getting my navi some seat time before we heat out together as well. I need to check her school schedule but we should be out at idaho. I kinda doubt I'll have our car done before then so I'll probably be wrenching for someone. She's not much of a forum person but I'll see if I can get her on here.

Will have all of her safety gear by then and she's been through Ecklund's navi class.

Alex,

Good luck with your co-driver search, I have had to look for a co-driver several times and it can a challenge. Having a novice co-driver can be a good thing. It really depends on your expectations for your first event as a driver, and your ability to drive within yourself.

It sounds like you have done some co-driving before so you should understand how the rally will flow and how the route book / time card / etc work, which you can help the new co-driver with as most of the questions usually occur around transits and service stops. The stages are easy since the course is usually banner taped and signed so even if the notes were in another language you should be able to get to the end of the stage without incident.

Having a novice co-driver could also cause you to slow down a little on the stages compared to riding with a more experienced navi, which might not be a bad thing for a first time driver. There is usually a gap between how fast new drivers think they can drive without crashing and how fast they can actually drive without crashing. I learned about this gap the hard way by having two offs in my first event, which caused me to miss the next rally on the calendar because I was spending all of my money fixing the car.

i have only organized stage events, never driven through one so im not sure of the particulars of the time cards. I was usually too busy running around with my arms flailing and herding cats (volunteers). Right now, Michael Milos is considering the event for me. If that falls through, Aaron ill be calling you if your serious. We have had some good times on Idaho roads in the past!

I just figured your response was a polite way of saying "I've spent one weekend in a car with you, and I couldn't stand to do it again." tongue sticking out smiley

Hey don't worry about "experienced" kau-draiver, as a newb you're big worry should be learning how to give it the full wellie and braking properly, and not making huge driving blunders. Small mistakes will happen, if you can be allowed small mistakes, you have to allow, and expect and forgive small mistakes.
How are newbular kau-draivers 'spossed to become 'sperienced kau-draivers?

It's not like you're going to win THE BIG RACE and by winning have a platoon of sex-crazed groupies fighting over who gets to put a big lip-lock on your love-muscle, or even pay the rent...

Relax, keep it straight, give 'er full gas, then brake....that's all there is to it.

The Big Race!

Well, considering what I saw for the events I attended as crew last year.. Idaho was the Big Race.. but Gorman was the big party smiling smiley.

Heck.. even the roads to the service area there were awesome. Too bad we have to behave and had cars loaded down with spares and tools. Can't wait to go back and drive that one. Hoping to do that this year, but then there's reality.

Of course an experienced co-driver can help you get through an event without having to figure out the mundane stuff like timing and staying on route, but your bigger focus should be finding someone close to you who you'll enjoy spending LOTS of time with driving around the countryside and, eventually, sitting in the woods with and watching the rally continue past you.

No need for the word 'small' in this John. Big mistakes do happen even to the 'top' teams.

Bu taking rides with experienced drivers who are just out for the fun of it and who are willing to do some training at the same time. There are a few around here who have done that and if I ever drive again I'm as likely to do that as well.
