Just found it is the Lemons crowd and their rules (thanks Tim). How many cars do they field normally? Say on an early 80s Moostang or TBird how many brake pads and how much fuel might a guy use? How anal are they on roll cages? If ya bring a bunch of CL ads for cars near $500 including the beater you bought does that work?
JV..new race track at Shelton. Drag and road course AND they said they would leave a dirt section for us... |

They allow something like 35 cars per mile of track. I went to the portland event, and must say it was ahoot, even though I did not drive. The most reliable car you can get is best. There were some quick cars, a simple 242 volvo with a shaved head was quick, and had zero issues in 16 hours of racing.
I want to be on a team for sure. |

Lemons is a joke. If you show up with a car that is fast, or even looks fast, you'll be penalized for it, if you're even allowed to run.
You have to come up with some goofy team theme when you register. At the LAST one our team entered, they decided they didn't like the theme and gave us a half hour to come up with something different. Then, as a penalty midway through the race for going four wheels off (it was that or make contact, which is also a penalty...) they took our mechanic's toolbox full of Snap-On tools and started to spray insulation foam in the drawers. Normally, the "penalties" are time-wasting things like apologizing on the PA, having to remove and reinstall a car part, something like that. As far as I'm concerned, LeMons can EABOD, DIAF, and STFU. ChumpCar looks inviting, though. Pete Remner Cleveland, Ohio 1984 RX-7 (rallycross thing) 1978 Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver. |

I thought I remembered the lemons guy being a total dick no one liked and couldn't remember the other group..Chump Car..thanks Pete!
So its looking a little pricey for him as he is currently drag racing a pretty stock Mustang so no legal helmet or firesuit. Figure the initial expense for everyone and then the risk of running afoul the organizers....(I will guarantee anyone vandalizing my toolbox sticthes at least)....it isn't sounding as good as they thought initially. |

It's racing for shitboxes. Fast cars aren't supposed to be there, take your BS laps with a smile, or bring the judges more tequila. What did you have, a Spec Miata? If you show up looking to win, you're likely going to get hassled. The whole point of LeMons is to be goofy and see if you can grind out more laps between spectacular mechanical failures than the other guys. Lamm does come across as a bit of an ass (show me a race series dictator that doesn't have a big ego), but Judge Phil seems like a good guy from the two minutes I spent talking to him at Loudon Annoying last year (and I like his writing all over the auto blogosphere). I also like that I can print out the LeMons rules in their entirety on about 20 cents worth of copy paper. ChumpCar took half a ream. That said, spray foam insulation in my tool box would likely result in me getting free room, board, and healthcare for several years in the state pen. Not cool at all. There's a $300 XR4 in my yard that's going to get built for the two NH LeMons races this year...I'm thinking the Merkurian Falcon will be a good theme for it, fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. I need to get out and do something stupid with cars, and I can afford splitting a crapcan build with a friend and 1/4 entry...I can't afford rally entry and expenses, and I'm not interested in co-driving. The portland race was chumpcar event, very well organized, and no such issues. They even let you run your SCCA club car for track time.
Just because it is a $500 car does not mean you should not prep it properly. The team next to us had a E30, and it spewed coolant waiting for the green flag. They did maybe 4 laps, then spent 1.5 hours doing a t-stat housing, did 5 laps, they spent 3 hours doing a head gasket. 10 laps later they crashed it, bent the RR into the tire, and I painfully watched them spend 45 min with a sawz all trying to get fender clearance while using a sledge hammer as a wheel chock. I finally told them to swing a hammer at it. Then they touched up the paint before heading back out.... BUt each team has a goal I guess. They did have some pretty cute girls there though.... |

That spray foam thing, if true, would not happen. Somebody needs to correct somebodys attitude. Shows that whoever did it--if done---is somebody who thinks everybody just plays with their tools.

Oooh, the Xratty is a solid LeMons choice. The guys from Autosport Labs/Chase Race had one at Thunderhill a few years ago. As it started loosing cylinders they just unplugged the corresponding injector. First down to an XR3Ti and eventually down to a flame belching XR2Ti that sounded like a Harley...stoopid fun ![]() |

I figure with the spares stash I still have (spare engine, check, spare turbo, check, spare diff, check, spare head gaskets. etc.), we'll be OK. I need to do some wheeling and dealing to get a freebie T5 setup, as I have my doubts about the T9 for two days of abuse at the hands of several drivers. With the basic most simple JVAB freebie junkyard prep (rad, intercooler, and I traded the door cards for an EVO 8 intercooler, muhahhahahaha), I figure the thing ought to go pretty good. I also understand that the guys with the 351 powered XR4 owe JV some ultra cheaty LEDA coil overs that they said "didn't fit" then never returned them... Andrew Steere Lyndeborough, NH KB1PJY |

Reading Lemons rules sounds like anyone can buy a license. Helmets must be closed face SA05 or FIA (no Peltors for them either?), double layer or single and undies for firesuit, 6 point real cage, 5 point harness, real seat and a few other rules. For him starting out this is about as expensive as rally is for a noob.
Quite a change from the old Double 500 that Damitio used to run in the beginning years ago. |
