Setup questions for a rallycross.
January 09, 2012 12:03AM
Hello again. So if everything goes as planned I will be driving at a rallycross on the 21st. Tomorrow I will begin to replace all my timing chains, guides, tensioners, and front lower ball joints. Oh and reconnecting my pcv to my intake. I am looking for some car setup tips.. for my first event.

1996 240sx
-1993 Ka24de 165psi across all 4
-auto tragic (workin on that one)
-riken raptor (pos- not worn, just cheap) tires

Driving in the street 2wd class. This is also my DD.

I've heard some things along the lines of sway bar removal but needed more input. My rear sway bar is already off....I busted a link.

Can anyone shoot me some pointers? THANKS!

Just go drive, and have fun! You won't win 1st time out. Find some old snow tires if you can. Be patient, and don't over drive the car.

Alright and any thoughts on removing or just disconnecting one end of the sway bar?

disconnect both ends, otherwise one wheel will act differently than the other. aside from that just have fun for your first time. You will learn a lot.

as far as a how to drive, you will have to try some things. Do not think of it as "drifiting" through the turns as your not trying to get "mad" angle, but instead go as fast as you can. So learn to turn off power through the turns applying your gas pedal as much as control allows. Obviously, it progressses from there, but not coming it at with "lots o speed, toss sideways, OMG! slide!!!!!.... off the course."

I would guess the rear bar needs to be hooked back up. Most cars are deliberately designed to under steer from the factory. Understeer considered is safe because the natural tendency is to crank the steering wheel harder. Countersteering is a learned art.

So if the rear bar is stock from the factory I would make sure it is hooked up myself so the car doesn't push badly going into a corner.

Don't overdrive the car. I've seen so many people just charge a corner too hard and lose speed because of it. Watch the cones, the penalty is pretty harsh. Rally X is more about precision than yeehaw if you want to win. Yeehaw if you just want to have fun.

And in a way bad Sub-a-rat at that. 3 tight LSDs, real brakes.
Pure Yeeee-haw.

1st overall for 'Most cones squished'.
Dave Clark pouted cause try as he could he didn't manage to squish more than about 120 to my 130+

Connect both sway bars if you're using stock springs. IMHO until you're upping the spring rates, the sways belong on the car. My car has rates over double stock and it still kinda needs sways.

Don't forget to have fun. Winning or losing costs the same and all you're running for is fun and bragging rights, and the fun is entirely up to you.

I got a ton faster when I forced myself to not slide so damn much, and drive more conservative. It's funny, in most cases there is no time to be made up on other people, there is only time to be lost.

Learn how your car reacts on dirt.. and learn the edges of your car.

What do I mean? you need to be able to put your car1-3 " inches off the cones. if you are getting 6" away from the cone, you are 3" too far away.

Honestly the best way to learn that is to get what feels like "too close" to the cone, keep getting too close until you are hitting them. then back off slightly..

Also learn what your car likes. some cars need a lot of weight transfer to the front to turn . others barely need any.
remember WOT LIFT then turn, then feed back in the gas. how much and how long to lift varies upon your car .

RWD, you may be able to drift just by stomping on the gas, except on really tight turns i would avoid doing that and learn how to weight transfer.

you'll know you are doing it right when the tail comes out with out using the gas pedal.

Definitely fix your rear sway bar attachment if on stock springs... or you may have too much understeer to overcome.

Take it all in and enjoy the event. smiling smiley
don't be afriad to ask people there for advice / help / ride alongs

Now I wish the link hadn't have broke on the rear...lol. But I /think/ I can make up for it if I can't get it in time. I've practiced some and yeah, too drifty but that helps knowing the car. My car loves front weight transfer for corners.

Lol JVL maybe I can beat your record. Not that I will try...haha

As far as my driving style when it comes to corners I see myself as very cautious. I usually go slow and liney and build to faster.

Also definitely looking forward to ride alongs.
