Whoes following Sno Drift?
January 28, 2012 12:29AM
So end of day 1 for Sno Drift, I was able to just follow the result updates!

Chris Duplessis has had a strong hold on first for 2wd and finished SS12 with a four minute lead.

Van Way has worked his way up to the number two spot after lagging behind in beginning. But Van Way, ACP Greenhouse and Eric are all within seconds of each other!

Higgins has had a strong lead on first for National Open!

Still an amazing 27 entires for the national. Rather expensive for those behind even the regional entries.

Only a few DNFs, including the Skelleys on stage 4. Didnt say what happened with that.

Duplessis is in a leage of his own there.
It sucks the Skellys are out, but it seems to always be 50/50 with a finish when there is a mad thrash to get the car done...

Always be prepared at least 2 weeks in advance is my goal.

It appears Billy did a 720 after the finish. He seems to be making a habit of spectacular after finish car maneuvers.

I guess another car did a 720.

Watched a bit of it live, but I only caught some starts. www.rally-america.com/live if you didn't know.

I'm actually pretty dissapointed so far with the info coverage. I think Bill Wood was doing a much better job of having updated videos (interview and on-stage footage) throughout the year. The live streaming is great and all, but they could have hired someone like Matt Johnston (or hell, Grant has mad production skillz) to have done SOME video of the event. In fact, it would have been money much more well spent IMO, especially if their equipment typically can't broadcast from in stage confused smiley

Also, their "live updates" which is typically updated with a paragraph or less of info on RA's website are non-existant this event. It'd be cool to hear why Antoine figures he is so far back (I'm assuming new car, but they could have had an issue) as I would have thought Antoine would be at least on par with Higgins on ice...

I agree, Im shifting through various team pages trying to piece together what is happening. Stages start up again pretty soon. Ill likely have to follow the same route then get the low down from forum posts in the coming week.

I thought RA did a great job, live coverage with a host that knows his shit. They did have Matt Johnston filming. They also had Byron Garth and crew there filming. I think the new owners are doing an awesome job.

As far as the event goes, pretty much everyone has said it was the most challenging event they have ever done. Travis taking 3rd over all on a dieing motor was incredible. Chris showed that no one can touch him in 2wd, evn with the house he rented burning to the ground while he was on stage. Burkes fight back up the leaderboard during the last 2few loops was also very impressive

Really low average speed on stages--lots of people averaging 35 mph. What was so difficult there that made the going so slow?

Ice. Really, really slippy ice with no studs. I always find it funny when people say something is as slippery as a skating rink, because skating rink ice is actually quite grippy even when freshly polished. There was one stage at Big White this year that was probably what this whole rally was like, any gas was just wheelspin, every corner it was a gamble that you'd initiate a corner too late and not be able to get the car rotated in time.

A prime example of the absolute idiocy of not running studs on RA events.

The Skellies got lost on transit and missed stages 4 and 5. They had no major offs and did what they set out to do. And that was Rally. Im not sure where you got the hype that they were going out to be fast. Most of the hype was about them being there and wanting to finish. They were able to go back out and run the night stages.Unfortunately all the hype of going rallying she forgot to release the e brake and smoked the rear breaks and missed the last to stages. So out of 24 stages They missed 4. The car is in 1 piece so there super happy.

Not sure I see the example.
There was still a race, the normally fastest guys won. The normally slower guys didn't. Conditions were reasonably the same for everyone - as much as they can be in a winter event.
Running at even a moderate pace on those roads would require MUCH more skill than running on WRC style studs and somewhat more skill than on street studs (although tractionised tires on glare ice can still grip like crazy)
What those conditions do provide, is a much more level playing field for the teams as you can't make any use of big pow-ahh.

In otherwords - this is probably much more of a test of driver skill than if it had been on studs.

In before: "its the same conditions for everybody neener neener"

and : "It's illegal to use studs on Michigan roads neener neener"

Oh yeah, "They're too expensive, did you think about that?"

And other boilerplate answers I have forgotten?smoking smiley

This has nothing to do with RA, they are illegal to use in the state of Michigan.

The cause of the slow speeds was the amount of shear ice and constant changing road conditions. You really never knew if you were going to have grip on the far side of a corner. Perfect example being. There was a very long straight with several creasts leading up to a small jump 30 left 3. We went over the creast at about 5you miles an hour and still went off the road. Every single competitor has said that this was the most difficult rally they have ever done.

Billyeee, so is driving down county roads at warp speed..
EVERYTHING we do in almost every way is done under some sort of dispensation, temporary permit, etc which allows us to do otherwise illegal stuff..

It has EVERYTHING to do with the core group of key people going back decades repeating simple answers so that guys like you will repeat them.

The truth is: NOBODY has ever even bothered to ask if, along with closing temporarily roads, driving at whatever speed, etc, crews could use some sort of studs for the couple of hours the total time of the event runs is.

The real answer is "Tough shit, sucker, that's the way its always been".
