That looked like a lot of work just keeping the car on the road. There's a few more video's showing a bunch of cars attempting to stay on the road. I looks like it would have been a really frustrating rally to drive. Also looks like zeroing out the boost tables in the ecu might have been a good choice, the lower power cars seemed much easier to deal with.

I'll be collecting used rally tire carcasses, then sending them off to these guys http://www.greendiamondtire.com/ to see if they'll remold them. I know they worked fairly well on the ice we'd get in MD, they also survived the last rallyx season until I found some gravel tires.

They aren't considered studded, so I don't think that would be an issue.
They don't grip like studs, but they do seem to be an improvement over a normal snow/ice tire. I remember one trip, from Manchester, MD to Abindgon MD at about 1:30am. It was chilly and foggy earlier in the day, with the ground cold. Damn if that fog didn't freeze to almost every road surface for the way home. It was very odd to be able to drive to car on something I couldn't stand up on.

I've used the green diamonds as well, and while ok, I think the good studless tires like a Blizzak is better. I think the green diamond idea is a good one, but the tread compounds are hard and not terribly flexible. I think their niche is in having a good "all seasony" type tread in the dry (i.e. minimal tread squirm) and having decent grip on the ice...which reminds me - why haven't I looked at putting those on my audi lately? LOL

So, according to Higgins, driving on the ice studless was mentally exhausting and rewarding... Just as I think it should be. A pretty interesting perspective in this video

I'll have to agree with him. Even with all my mechanical problems, driving on the ice was indeed mentally exhausting. But at the end of it all, it was quite rewarding to make it to the end rather unscathed except for a few encounters with snowbanks. I'll more than likely be back next year, studs or not.

Probably the most challenging event in the States even tho not the fastest. I'd guess those guys were as exhausted after that as we were back in the real Olympus days. Really amazing that the fast guys all pretty much kept their respective places in the pecking order under those conditions.

Yeah, it was slick out there. Going with DOT studs wouldn't have made much of a difference except giving people the false impression they had a lot more grip. It was far worse than the 2010 ice*drift. Mainly because 2010 temps were in the highs in the teens and lows in single digits. This year the highs were just above/below freezing so there was that nasty water layer on top of everything. Also, it wasn't all 100% ice. Some turns had massive grip and were pure dirt others were glare ice. Friday was a bad day for me. Got stuck 3 times and lost a ton of time. After the first off, I couldn't get back in the groove and it kept getting worse. Also getting further in the pack behind people didn't help. Saturday was better, I was leading G2 and then on transit after a stage the co-driver was opening up the route book and I looked down to reset our GPS odomoeter. I veered off the road just slightly to get stuck. Teams tried to pull me out, but I was on the edge of a ditch and I kept getting deeper and deeper. Eventually we got out and checked in 17 minutes late to the next control. 2:50 in penalties and we lost G2 by 2:32. Also, the last 15 mile stage we caught 4-5 cars. Including the Skelly's. We were on their rear flashing our driving lights and they did not get out of the way for a good 1/2 a mile. We were on a 2 lane road and they were driving the middle and they had plenty of room to move out of the way. Now I gotta sort the check engine light that put me into limp mode (3500rpm/45mph) for 1/3 of that 15 mile stage as well before I enter 100AW. |

Looking forward to seeing how you do at 100AW! I know once I saw you on my ass I tried to get over ASAP since you were going for a class win while I was just trying to make it through. Hopefully I didn't impede you too much.
![]() Though I will have to admit, following you after you passed me made me happy that I had AWD. I wasn't trying too hard and was able to keep up with you while you were all over the road keeping that thing in line. Was very entertaining to watch. I'll get the on-board footage up soon. ![]() |

I'm hoping I can get this CEL sorted before 100AW. I'll probably just show up, but I'm going to be REALLY dissapointed if it decides to pop up again. Since I replaced the dizzy (which contains the sensor) and it still pops, I'm putting it towards a janky engine harness so I am replacing that. As a safe measure I might as well replace the ECU and jumper harness as well to eliminate anything that could be wrong in circuit path.
You got out of the way in plenty time. I actually thought you guys had a problem as we had comparable stage times leading up to that stage. As far as following me, Bushore was telling me the same thing when I passed him on stage as he was limping from a broken axle. It such a mess with all the ice. A lot of rotating the car to try and get it straight and late apex as much as possible. Considering I almost stuffed it in the snow bank just before the last turn as well. It was so much easier while doing recce in the STi! Hopefully we get a warmer than last year 100AW that's nice and dry. I really want to stretch the legs on the Civic there. |

I stopped to pull out someone if I recall correctly. Never had any major problems once I was on stage except for when my tranny plug dropped out and all my gearoil said bye-bye, but that was later in the day. Since I wasn't going for a class win or anything, I stopped to help anyone that I could. Figured being that far back in the pack, a heavy AWD car with decent snow/ice tires will help out the G2 and G5 guys. I think I pulled out 3 cars while on stage, and one more attempt when I tried to pull you out on the transit.
Gotta build up that rally karma! ![]() |
