Studs are for pussies. Unstudded is faster. And more challenging. I know i had lots of fun on studs but I don't know anything. Nothing. Carry the logic further. You're such a whiner John. Why don't you just give up the pity-party bullshit. (Talk about adding NOTHING to the discussion at hand...) Kevin, If it truly is an ice-fest then studs will be marginally better than a good 'new technology' studdless tire. Better yet would be a studded tire that is also 'new technology.' I'm not a fan of blizzaks, but haven't run them enough to know if they are good or not. The Kumho KW22 is the new 'flavor of the month' around here, replacing the KW19, and it can be studded. It also comes in a heavy duty version with thicker sidewalls. Maybe some studded Ipikes?
I've got unstudded on my daily, and for the last 2 seasons, they've been awesome. ESPECIALLY on black ice (obviously general driving - I think there will be more snow/ice for t bird haha) However, I'm thinking that the ipikes with their awesome rubber/tread and some studs may be a pretty good choice. well, i got a set of blizzaks on the car and a pile o' studded hankooks in the gay-rage, so i should be ok for options, was wondering if it was worth putting miles on the studs if its frozen gravel. was thinking it would be best to run em...
what could go wrong? |

Once is a joke, but you've posted similarly before (about studs, and other things.) It's OK, you don't like it when people don't bow down to your expertise and strong opinion and everyone I talk to knows that. I'm told it's part of your 'charm.' the problem is that 'studs' is so poorly defined when we've been discussing it here that while it SEEMS like we disagree, we probably don't. (Which is FAR to common the case) For sake of clarification: Un-studded = NEW condition 'new technology' ice tire with open pattern to clear snow, lots of siping from the factory and tall enough sidewalls to buffer control inputs and maintain traction in the contact patch. Street Studded = max 130 per tire, max 3.5mm length commonly defined by state/provincial laws. This matches the WCRC rules, which were drawn up from the lowest common denominators from BC and Alberta. (Note: Practical experience has shown that at 3.5mm releif, the studs are QUICKLY removed from the tires at speed. 2-2.5 has been seen as the magic bullet.) Rally Sweden 'recce' tires = max 250 per tire, 15mm long with max 2mm relief. Rally Sweden Rally Tires = max 120 studs per 60 cm, or about 420 per tire, with a max 4.5mm releif. More than 3x the number of studs legally allowed - but we could always ask for permission I suppose. The biggest problem with high releif, high density tires is what happens when you get onto bare pavement with them. From what I understand, they are worse than just about any ice situation when run on dry pavement. remember, (They need to dig into the surface for grip.) Let me get this straight - you haven't run them enough to know if they are good or not, but enough to know that you are not a fan? That's strange. The brand Blizzak covers a lot of different tires and some are better on the ice than others. I have the Blizzak WS-60s (on the smart car, which I have used in my steward duties at the Big White Rally) and the biggest problems are because of the car (RWD and very nanny-ish traction control), not the tires. My preference for a road-legal ice tire would be the latest studded Nokian Hakkas (except that it isn't available in sizes for the smart car). alan |

Alan:
what I was trying to say is that from what I've heard from others and from limited time in a car with blizzaks I don't think the name 'blizzak' is enough to sell me on them being a blanket good choice. I then qualified that by saying my direct personal experience was limited. The general consensus is that there are cheaper, better tires out there (same goes for Nokian) I've run Hakka1s with studs, Hakka Qs (studless) and 2 sets of KW 19s, one studded the other not, and am now on KW22s. The kumhos out performed the Nokians at half the price. (granted, not real bench-mark testing, but in terms of confidence and consistency in general driving impression over a long period of time) First Rally: 2001 Driver (7), Co-Driver (44) Drivers (16) Clerk (10), Official (7), Volunteer (4) Cars Built (1), Engines Built (0) Cages Built (0) Last Updated, January 4, 2015 ![]()

Comparing early 2000s Hakkas with late 2000s Kumhos doesn't seem a fair comparison, but whatever ... alan |

The comparison was actually early 2000s hakas to early 2000s Kumhos. Hakkas on my daily and Kuhmos on my rally car.
