Wow, just logged in at the end of lunch. Don't have time to read it all and respond yet, because I'm not a trustafarian.

I work 60 hours a week as a machinist.

More this week.

RALLY ON!

And technically, I'm a rally driver Newb (because I've only driven in one rally), but I've been a rally volunteer for 16 years. BTW.

Nobody discounted the Fiesta, EVERYBODY just said "What the fuck? $64,000 to go beat off with your buddies"
Not EVERYBODY said that.
In fact, many people I know looked at the kit and said 'that's not bad for a properly engineered and tested kit. Real suspension, sequential dog box and so-on.'

I'm fairly certain $64K is the 'turn key' price for a built car. The life cycle for the parts is such that no parts should be needed (barring accidents) for a full (national) season.

I'm all for running junk yard cars... Cause I'm a cheap ass bastard, and I'm never going to care if my rally toy is shiny and cool. I'm there to fling something around in the dirt legitimately and not get arrested or kill someone (not particularly in that order of importance!).

But don't we need someone to develop tomorrows junk yard cars?

If we don't have someone wasting their hard earned money today finding out that the latest Mistukiadiaburuord R345 sucks, or rocks or has a weak ____, then how will we know what to run in 10 years, when all the 240s (both Swedes and Japs) and all the Gloves are nothing but a memory in the junkyard dogs eye?

And with that in mind...

What are the junkyard rally cars of tomorrow? What current model is going to be a good privateers cheap ride in 15 years?

Kia and Hyundai.
In November of 2007 Kia sold 5300 Spectras. November is usually one of the worst months.
Hyundai sells 20-50,000 cars per month. I bet a ton of those are Accents or Elantras.

You can find a 2002 or 2003 of either model for under $2k if you look hard enough.
I have checked out the suspension bits on the Hyundai Accent at the junk yard. Small but could be improved.

Lots of good discussion for a change!

Grant is right with the Kia/Hyundai idea I think. Great little disposable cars with serious links to Mitsu and Mazda. Every year the old 240 and Merkurs become less relevant. They rot more, head for the crusher or whatever. Their days are numbered and they never were popular in the states in the entire history of rally. What is that old saw about a shark having to keep moving to stay alive?

Its a fair question to ask what else is available for rally donors , today and tomorrow. Wouldn't take much more to build a strut for an Accent or lower control arms that it does for an old Volvo.

One should also ask why rally attracts people who don't shower as Mark points out smiling bouncing smiley Dakar certainly draws the moneyed crowd, as does any WRC race. Desert racing has a large mix of W2s. Heck if you go by the ORV park down the road from my house on a weekend you will see the place packed with large motorhomes and toyhaulers behind. Massive dollars sitting there all for dirty recreation.

Finding the ticket to attract the next couple income levels would give the sport stability, raise the entry fields and benefit everyone. Po folk could still race their 2.5 events a years without a co-driver in an old 240...

Who has driven an accent lately? I know it's not a "real" gear box, but it feels surprisingly good for a stock box...

And while small, I think there's a place for the Echo/Yaris (but I do have a Justy so...)

See. I think that's our new blood issue right there. Nice, respectable rally potential there.

But really.. what 20 something male wakes up in the morning and thinks.. My dream in life is to race a hyundai f'n accent..

Sounds more like a punishment for something you did in a previous life, or maybe the starter car in a Dirt 3 like video game.

Is there anything out there that's cheap that has the potential of getting the driver laid in stock form?

Toybaru BRZ/GT-86.

200HP, RWD, under 2800 lbs stock.

If it's a success, it would probably make a good platform in 5 years.

Yeah, but sadly that's probably one of the lightest vehicles you'll find in MY2013.

Well. Current rumor is that the 2014 Blue cars will be about the size of a widetrack yaris.. sporting 260 and 300hp... That's my '2nd car' plan smiling smiley
