Yeah and there's even more nothing available for the box/final drive because it's more popular. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Pacific Standard Time is 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. |

Look at it this way. The first car you got you'd never lifted the skirt of. Everything you've learned you've learned since then. Why are you more of a wuss now that you're older and actually know about cars to learn something new? ![]() I know what you mean though. I only really knew shit about Subarus so always wanted a Subaru. Then I found myself working/helping with Eclipse, Audi, Subaru, VW, Ford and Dodge rally cars and realized that cars are cars. Yeah, there's little 'tricks' to be learned to make a 4 hour job take 20 minutes on all cars, but the little shit is always the same. Now I look more to things like, ease of making power with stock engine, gearbox and gearing options, differential options (probably #1 in my opinion, if you can't get a proper diff or you need to buy 3 of them, don't go that route), brakes, dimensions and weight, suspension design and components (MacPherson, semi-trailing, multi-link, control arm flimsyness, etc). And most importantly, availability of the car. If they are rare and expensive, probably not the best choice for a rally car. It should be something where if you wreck it beyond repair, you could be back on stage for under $5k plus time. That to me means a $2k and under base car. Grant Hughes |

as I understand it, it's been done 2 or 3 times. IIRC, all the engine mounts have to be relocated, and some mods required to the front crossmember/subframe. One of the local guys has one in progress (and has been that way for 18+ months), and even though he keeps talking about it eventually being a stage car, I'll believe it when I see it. Seeing the thing out of the car makes me imagine in a light(er) shell like a B13, it'll have an awesome lawn-dart weight distribution. ![]() ![]() http://www.utahrallygroup.com |

i think its more of my work flowing over into personal life. Im having to constantly learn the knew thing, the next best thing, then try and remember what was new last year cause we have that broken right now. So much crammed in this brain i swear somethings going to fall out learning volvo porn. Probably also a resistance to chg. Sticking with what i know. Plus, I think they are ugly. But then again, I thought the same bout my Dodge. Now, my wife has to slap my hand when ever i fondle the shifter. |

uhm i think i agree with everyone...
![]() One cool thing about everyone showing up in the same car is that you get other "near equal" cars to compare yourself too. again with the fiat 500, or the XR4TI you wouldn't have someone else in the same car to compare your times too. though i know at the of the stage, we just compare ourselves to who ever is running ahead of us . end of a transit you compare your times to a few spots down as well . if you're running 1st you don't really need to check times, as long as you don't get reseeded you're still leading... Sometimes i see cars that i want to rally.. even thinking they would be horrible rally cars.. I'd love to have a ford fusion in open lite trim. 6 speed manual, awd, 4 bangers and V6's available ... christler 300M ... hmm... okay yes i have horrible tastes in cars.. I just think a bad, american Big heavy car would be FUN and challenging to throw around. I'd love a Porsche as a race/rally car... ugh.. i need to work more and keyboard less... lol might have extra money for toys |

When I was deciding between a Volvo or Merkur the Volvo got a plus 1 to not having to do any cosmetics to it. It's what it is, round headlights, little rear spoiler, and go. With the Merkur there was body work to get rid of the hideous dual side windows, Cossie grill, headlights and bumper, get rid of the hideous rear spoiler and get the whale tail. Thankfully, Sean came up with a $40 solution for the front bumper, but I did spend $600 on the whale tail and a handful of days cutting, welding, and bondo to make a single big rear window and another $400 or so on the grill and headlight stuff. So $1000 just to make it so I didn't have to taste stomach bile everytime I looked at my rally car. Too bad I couldn't figure out a way to make the arches work... ![]() Grant Hughes |

Between 240s, 740s and 940s, that's probably half the entries in typical Swedish event. They made them until who knows when? Unlike here, most guys spend a lotta dough on their powerplants and those Redblocks are good strong things John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! About that availability thing...
When I was living in Seattle, there were shitloads of cheap Volvos and Merkurs were both available for sale and in junkyards. Not so here in Florida. Here, it would make more sense to recommend a 240SX, Mustang, E30/E36 BMW, or a Merc 190 as good starter cars based on availability and cheapness. My point being that best starter cars are probably different regionally. |

I still secretly think a Panther spec series with stock everything running light truck tires would be awesomely fun and cheap. ![]()
