Give me a snow event where I can run WRC/IceRacing studs and I'll show up. I really don't find DoT studs as a selling point for running studs. Running S*D this year (and 2010) was just boring, frustrating, hair raising, and all that repeated a hundred times. When the pointy end of the stick can't break a 40mph avg speed, I might as well run a TSD and get the same "excitement" it seems. |

But will you be okay with the $300 and up per tire cost? The only thing to even consider in my mind is finding a rental for Arctic Lapland. I've seen privateer Group F/2 cars like Focus or Opels in the $5-6k range for the event. Pretty awesome experience for ~$10k Grant Hughes Edited 1 time(s). The tires don't have to be that expensive. Possibly look into take-offs from the Andros teams. I'm also (slowly) looking into bringing in some ice tires. The thing that's nice about the Andros tires I've seen is they're not chock full of studs, much less than a Michelin C5 for example.
IMO, the big problem with WRC studs is there are so many different variants in terms of stud counts, so even if we allowed them, there'd need to be some sort of rule on maximum stud count allowed...unless we could provide competitors relatively inexpensive access to a spec tire. Dave |

The Andros tires are nice...but since they are not coming to Canada any more, finding them on this side of the pond is tough...and expensive. They get knackered pretty quick too, we went through 3 sets in a weekend of running in Sherbrooke... the andros cars also end up running on the pavement below the ice or the dirt more often than not. The "expensive" part on these tires comes from the studding process. They are all HAND STUDDED! The stud pockets are drilled, then injected with a rubber glue/cement, then the stud is injected. The unstudded tires themselves are similarly priced to their equivalent gravel size. Studs are available locally. http://www.brunowessel.com/catalog/index.asp?display=all&categoryid=1 Chris |

I have a buddy who always seems to have a line on 3 or 4 sets of them for stupid cheap prices....like $100 per tire. Those guys have been using them out on frozen lakes for 3 years and haven't lost more than a few studs. I suspect its driving on pavement that's murder on these tires. I bought a set of C5s and did the hand studding with a loaner gun from BW. The studs I picked to use for the tires tore the tread blocks and lost 1/3 of the studs in an afternoon on the lake...and only after did I find out that Buffam had a bunch of the studs meant for those tires. Still not a happy camper over that expense, but at some point when I have time, I'm thinking of pulling all the big studs and sticking the ones designed for those tires back in there, as those don't seem to fall out...even from torn tread blocks. I've talked with Black Rocket about bringing in some of their tires. If we get to the point of having 3 snow events in state it'll be worthwhile to bring in a container. Tough part is their production capacity is about 220 tires per month and a container takes 250 so between them fulfilling their normal Scandanavian orders it will take a long time to fill a container. AKA they really don't need to sell to us.

You're the enviro guy.... ![]() The Team O'Neil Rally, 2009, was a winter event, sanctioned by NRS, and allowed (and had) studs. None on the calendar at the moment. Anders Grassroots rally. It's what I think about. |

You might want to talk to their Official North American Agents first. Second, you need to look into LTC. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Pacific Standard Time is 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. |

If they talked to Grant then they either directed him to their Official North American agents or they aren't particularly worried about their agency agreements.
