hey im new here. got any good advice
March 16, 2012 09:00AM
I want to rally. (or somthing)

Hello. I'll start with a little intro. im from michigan but am currently living in germany (military) and I want to do some racing. I am most interusted in rally since it looks like a lot of fun sliding around corners and jumping over hills but im open to anything that can get me in a car and having fun.

I have been looking in to rally here in germany a little but I dont know realy where to start. I want to figure out what class of rally to get in to. My basic wants are to have enough races to keep me buissy and costs that arent in the 10's of thousands for one season.

$8000-10000 to buy a used built car. $1500-2000 per race. Plus tow rig. Plus friends to support you.

what kind of racing is that price for. I was reading the rules for FIA rally and it seems like there are a lot of different classes. I was also looking at Prepped cars online but they were all diffident classes and i didn't know what would be the best fit for me how should I go about figuring the right class. Any advice?

If you are starting in Germany I would find a school and go learn, learning helps.

And you need lots of bacon...just buy in bulk, cheaper that way.

Al beat me to it. Get in touch with Erni. There is a good local car club network in Europ. Just remember that they are way ahead of the US. The rally seen in America is primitive in comparison.

Your job right now is to learn and save money. The cash that you should spend now is to go to as many of the driving programs that you can afford. I was at the Silverstone rally school in England last year. One of my co-workers did a driving school program at the Nurburg Ring and Spa. You have acsess to so many great learning opportunities. You need to take advantage of this before you think about getting into competition or building a car.

Listen and learn.

Good luck.

And for goodness sake, buy a car that is already finished and has a logbook. I did not. I bought a car that had a new engine and trans, but crappy suspension and a non-updated cage, plus a ton of wiring issues. You can find deals. I'm over $9k into a stupid VW.
Better cars can be bough for 4-6k.
Buy a G2 car that has raced in the last few years, you'll be on stage sooner and not in the garage being pissed off at something.

Rallying is expensive.

Boys the guy is near Trier in the far West of Germany. No Group2 there.
There is http://www.schotter-cup.de/
"Schotter Cup". Schotter is gravel

The rules are here: http://www.schotter-cup.de/pdf2012/2012-SC-Ausschreibung.pdf

But our man doesn't yet read Germanski and translating piles of German text to Engleski is a drag especially when the info is in PDF.

Now fortunately the Germans are stupid and ther are classes for everything
and nice for limited budget guys, they have in Germany their own Volvo Original Cup---and lots of guys seemed to have figured out there just how cheap and effective Volvos can be....

Additionally, from Trier to say Hengelo in the Netherlands is only 375km---under 4 hours away and the Dutch, also not stupid people, also have VOC.

Further there is evidently close cooperation between the Dutch VOC guys and the 'Duits" VOC guys and it seems some Dutch VOC events are held across 'die grenze' in Germany...

If I was Nick that's the direction I would begin sniffing in.

Here is some VOC stuff in der BRD:

Nick the cool thing about this VOC thing is for low cost you have a class with some good competition and a whole series aimed at maximizing the Euro spent to giggle return ratio.

THEN maybe later, if you want, the basic platform is very easy to progressively and piecemeal upgrade to really kick ass levels...

You gotta start working on picking up a) contacts and don‘t worry initially about no speakie Germanski.
I moved to Sweden to do motorsport when I was 17 and didn't speak any Swedish---guys IN the sport are loons and will be glad to help when they see you suffer from same disease...
but
b) gotta learn at least to read

I gotta run and weld some ears on struts (one of the things I do over here is make rally suspension)

As for cars---I'll look and see if there are any VOC cars in Germany, Holland or even better Sweden to get an idea what it may cost.

That's great thanks. I was thinking about going to some kind of driving school. I'll look at the Nurburgring since its only 45 min away.

I do plan to learn German soon as i have a chance and that will make things easier, I think.

german will only confuse you. i have been half assed attempting to learn in it, some evidence of that on here. Essentially, take what you know about communication and disregard it.

Book Description
Publication Date: June 1982
There are many different ways to learn a foreign language. The ultimate aim of language learning is to understand, speak, read and write the foreign language with the same ease and efficiency as one's mother tongue. Practically all language courses are aimed at making progress in all four skills at once, to learn to read, to write, to speak and to understand the language all at the same time. In Cracking the Language Code, our approach is to keep each of the four skills as separate as possible. This book, which we call the 'IN' Course, is meant to be your first introduction to the German language. It concentrates on helping you to acquire the ability to read and understand written German and to translate from written German into English. There is at this stage no attempt whatsoever to enable you to write or speak German. Those are skills which you may decide to acquire after you have completed this book. After acquiring an IN-coming knowledge of German (a passive knowledge with the ability to read and understand the language), you may then decide to acquire and OUT-going knowledge of German (an active knowledge with the ability to write and speak the language). To those who feel this divorcing of the passive ability from the active ability is unnatural, this is what really happens when a child learns his own native language, understanding the language far ahead of his ability to use the forms and words he understands.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great way to develop reading knowledge of the language, May 12, 1998

This review is from: Cracking the Language Code: German (Paperback)
This is one of the most fascinating language books I have read. Rundle's goal is to develop reading knowledge, as distinct from writing, speaking, and verbal comprehension. His hypothesis is that European languages are sufficiently similar that, with a few rules and occasional resort to the dictionary, you can quickly learn to puzzle out written material. Along the way, he has a great romp through linguistic history. Highly recommended.

I speak a couple of languages. I used to speak 4 in a typical month and read 3 more But that's NOT a big deal when they are so so close.
I had figured out a good deal of what the guy is talking about here and for me doing motorsport in WESTERN Europe, there was only 2 language:: groups: Those derived from Latin garrison speech (not snooty Roman Senate speech, but the Latin the Romans who founded Trier spoke to their troops in----kinda connecting a little 2000 years of history here, eh?)
and those derived from the Northern German dialects a bit farther North than where you are..
From Northern German developed Swedish (and Danish and Norwegian and Icelandic and Faroese) in the one directions and to the west Frisian, Dutch/Flemish and English....with repeated refreshing doses of more northern German dialects (Sachsen, and then the Vikings came...)

From the garrison Latin developed all the modern Romance languages, for me French being the most important. But we have so much French in English that it was very easy.

Get that book, it is one if not the best books I have seen ever on the idea of learning languages.
