Who's going to show up first with a FT86?
March 28, 2012 10:17AM
Looks like Toyota Japan is supporting a FT86 rally project.

Toyota 86 Rally Car Challenge
"TOYOTA 86 RALLY MOVING FULL THROTTLE"
Here is the making movie of the Toyota 86 Rally car which can be seen by the Toyota Championship #3 winner in SNR at the Tour de KYUSHU in Japan.

So who is calling Scion and Subaru and getting them to sponsor a MaxAttack FT86/BRZ?

These two cars could really bring some life into 2 wheel drive rally in the States if some teams can make the right business case!

1) Subaru already makes up 95% of the AWD field in the states. Why would they spend any $$$ to add 2wd entries?

b) What value would Scion have in adding a second "factory" car, when they've already got the somewhat successful xD?

iii) More late-model cars running minutes behind Duplessis isn't really going to do much to "bring some life into 2 wheel drive rally".

Not trying to bash the idea - I'd love to see this car as a successful stage car here, but I just don't see the business case for Subaru or Toyota to put any money into it, and the rally drivers in the US who have $25k to drop on a new shell don't seem to be playing in 2wd.

Oh you nay sayer you!
If you're serious about winning the BIG RACE, then 25k or 64k for a Fiesta is small change..

Just think of all the opportunities if you WIN! Sponsorship, glamor, pit tootsies..
You'd be like a Rockstar!

If you're serious.

Well, Both of these companies have new cars to launch and new car launches have budgets for silly things like racing money disposals.

The xD is stupid transportation appliance with few real world redeeming virtues and the FT86 is the new hotness destined to be an enthusiast cult classic.

Scion is pushing drift for the FT86 but a little added airborne sideways dirt cred with a bit of Block hoonage treatment would certainly get some facetube views.

Admittedly, it's a long shot given the state of 2wd rally on this continent. It's a hard sell with no TV package and even if there was TV I doubt the execs would be excited to see their car up against a field of 20 year old beater club level cars.

One can dream right?

I love the whole "run old cars forever!" mentality of this site. They're going to be gone someday... What's going to replace them?

What's the best nation in the world?

Domi-nation!

I'll answer that with a point. There's a rally xD out there?

I thought people who built "new" cars would get preproduction models, or cars retired from the press fleet, or cars that were damaged in shipping, or otherwise vehicles that can't be sold as new.

Buy a NEW car, like from a dealership? "Want that extended warranty?" "No. In fact, I'd like to negotiate with your parts department the possibility of selling lots of stuff back to you."

by appearances, one of the best funded/supported 2wd entries out there.

a few counterpoints...
There's rally in the US?
You don't have to have a STI or an EVO to rally?
You can rally a 2wd car?

I'd love to know. I'd imagine that's how it works for SRTUSA. Maybe even Antoine. I'd like to think if folks were getting any sort of discounted pricing on Fiestas for R2, it would be somewhat publicized, but then again, that seems to be a "if you have to ask on an internet forum, then you obviously can't afford it" situation.

I will one day rally an FT86. Probably when they are 32 years old, like my current toyota. But sanity and logic be damned, I will rally one.

I'd rather you drove it well.

There are plenty of others who can rally it badly.
