My '79 wagon averaged 22mpg (one random trip saw 28!). That has the older mechanical fuel injection, basically a glorified garden hose. The car also had 200K+ on the odo and needed a head rebuild. It could have been a bit better.
The later ones could hover into the 30s.
Also, they are extremely predictable when driven fast on gravel. You can also drift them on pavement with a little practice (no, you can't just mash the go! pedal).

My wagon, Turbo, commuting to work 25 miles each way in rough stop and go traffic will average 17-18. Road trips net 25. Track time is around 4-8

MPG's are ambitious....

30mpg, really?

The best I've seen was a '86 245 DL....that's right, a B230F, 9.sumptin:1 compression ratio, NA motor that made about the same 100hp as Al's construction colored Rallie Car. It had the M46 4-speed manual gearbox, with a electric, push-button 5th gear, overdrive unit. I believe '86 was the last year for the M46, and it also had 3.31 gears in the diff, so SUPERRRR TALLL.

No rallie machine with that gearing and power output, but long highway trips to LA from SF would yield 28 or so MPG's, at 75-80mph.

Yep, suspenderz do wonders on these cars......I focused on MOAR POWERZZZZZZ n started to struggle in da twisties, while Al took the "higher" road, and got his car glued before making booooossssstttt.
