Question for you Volvites
April 01, 2012 03:40PM
I'm tired of my gutless Honda, so I'm trying to figure out what I'd like to replace it's wimpitude when the time comes where I have the money to do so.

So what are you guys' favorite Volvo forums where people have really cool 240/242s that they want to get rid of, preferably with a more efficient engine swap already done? I know people do that kind of stuff, I just don't know what forums are actually worth sniffing around.

Al Kun vaccuums up all the coolest dead end projects. He has a growing fleet of the bitchinest of the bitchin.

Mylesofsmiles Myles, he's close by Al and he knows where derelict cars can be found for cheap..

The best projects are actually here...

A surprising number of Turbobrickers have come here. There's Myles, Vince, my cousin in VA, Lawrence Knox in VA, some others who lurk..

You guys rock, as always

. I guess I'll throw out there what I'm looking for, even though it's over a year away before I can start "really" looking:

A 242 (preferrably) that's been lowered a little bit, manual trans (of course, what kind of man would I be if I wanted an auto?), and a more modern engine that gets around 30-40 mpg average. I don't know if that even exists for the fuel economy, but I figured I'd cast my line and see what comes in. smiling smiley

Your dreamin on the fuel economy..30 maybe if somebody is smart and listened...
But Turbobricks is full of drag racers wannabes who think a HUGE HOLSET is Stage 1...then they wonder why their cars never spool.
All the "lowered cars" are done the normal short spring 2-4 times stiffer on a limp dick shock/insert..
Re handling there's a bunch of fixie riding urban hipsters a few of which squish cones, so you can be assured the advice on springs and dampers is----

is

IS

fawked up.

(One of the self proclaimed ex-spurt "I know about suspension cause I am an Engineer (played with CAD a lot)" is notoriously famous on You-tube nearly flipping his 245 at about 20 mph...
Smoooth clean asphalt on a sunny day at 20mph.

A stock Volvo can go 20mph without nearly flipping----you gotta try HARD to fawk up a car that bad....and brag you're an ex-spurt.

Ask Myles about his ride---Turbo with all the "normal hooptie" stuff and how that compared to riding in a car completely wrong for asphalt: Al Kun's 240--with a junkyard engine on gravel tires.

Step 1: Buy cheap running, mechanically sound prancing moose.
Step 2: Do tune up. Fix all the sketchy stuff from years of "This is a Volvo, it's a tank! They are indestructible!" mindset. Marvel at how easy they are to work one once you break the bolts loose.
Step 3: Buy used/never installed IPD lowering springs from CL or a bricksta! Make stiffer sway bars (or buy them) so you can see over the front fender under hard cornering (my 245 didn't roll, it would list like ship in a storm)
Step 4: Avoid reading about how quick and easy it is to do a LH 2.4 turbo swap into the car. It's still an engine/ecu swap.
Step 5: Sell car to fund other racing projects, miss it immensely.
Step 6: Buy used turbo 242 with bad engine for next to nothing, four months later.
Step 7: Avoid Step 4 and read about the engine swap. Purchase/trade/haggle for all the parts. Volvo parts are cheap in the PNW when you know the right people/junk yards.
Step 8: Start the swap!

I love my Wagon even though it is not Volvo powered. Utility, check. Wicked good looks, check. Awesome drift angles, check. Easy to work on, check.... You get the picture.

I had a 245. The tinworms got it........

I bought Mother Volvo's answer - a V70R. Never looked back.

It has seen more gravel than most 4x4s, although it is stupid low.

ymmv

press on,
