Portugal had not had significant rain since May of 2010 - Typically a very dusty event due to the very fine dust - which when doused with rain, became a very fine snotty consistency.
Completely agree that stopping the stages went against the spirit of rally. I think the organizers were worried they wouldn't have any WRC level runners on Sat if they let the Fri stages continue. The first stage of the day, Tavira, was new to the rally, so new notes for all the teams - First time through would have been the riskiest, second time through they should have cleaned up the notes and should have been fine.
couple of short clips from Tavira stage pass 1 - the water crossing was a swelled over creek - it was flowing pretty well - and the rain was on/off/on/off downpours (media guys were getting soaked):

I thought the drama was great - good to see the back markers making strides - and, I think Portugal has some of the more challenging roads I've seen - extremely technical - and very rough.
